Quin Mahler-Moreno and Dylan Manning are voted the Register Athletes of the Week
Perry girls swimmer Quin Mahler-Moreno and Dowling Catholic football player Dylan Manning were voted the Des Moines Register's Female and Male Athlete of the Week winners for Aug. 27-Sept. 2 by Register readers.
Mahler-Moreno received 62.60% of the Female Athlete of the Week vote (4,569). Ames girls cross country runner Claire Helmers came in second with 29.59% (2,160).
Mahler-Moreno swam the fastest 500-yard freestyle time in Iowa thus far for the Perry girls swimming and diving team during the Bluejays' 90-80 dual meet victory over Indianola on Aug. 29.
Mahler-Moreno touched the wall in five minutes, 16.8 seconds.
Manning won Male Athlete of the Week with 58.13% of the vote (30,474). Sidney football player Michael Hensley took second with 40.82% (21,402).
Dowling Catholic rode its defense to victory over rival West Des Moines Valley on Friday and Manning set the tone for the Maroons.
Manning had nine tackles and two sacks to lead the 5A No. 1 Maroons to a 14-0 victory over the then-No. 4 Tigers.
