Vols defeat Florida in SEC series opener

No. 1 Tennessee won the opening game of its Southeastern Conference series against Florida Friday in Gainesville.

Tennessee (35-3, 15-1 SEC) scored seven runs in the second inning. The Vols won, 8-2.

Trey Lipscomb, who went 2-for-5 against the Gators (23-15, 7-9 SEC) had a three-run home run for Tennessee, which has now won four consecutive games since losing the series opener against Alabama in Knoxville on April 15.

Jordan Beck went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for the Vols, while Cortland Lawson went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.

Tennessee pitcher Chase Burns (7-1) started and went 6.1 innings. He surrendered two runs (one earned), two hits and three walks. Burns had five strikeouts against the Gators.

Burns gave way to Ben Joyce who gave up one hit and one walk, while striking out two.

Redmond Walsh pitched the ninth inning and recorded one strikeout, while facing three batters.
