Virginia Tech star Ashley Owusu out indefinitely with broken pinkie finger

The nation’s top shooting guard is out indefinitely with a broken finger.

Virginia Tech senior Ashley Owusu broke her pinkie on her shooting hand earlier this month, Hokies head coach Kenny Brooks said Thursday, via ESPN. She underwent surgery on Dec. 6 and is now out indefinitely.

The team hopes she can return midway through the ACC schedule, though a specific time frame is unknown.

Owusu broke her pinkie in Virginia Tech's win over Nebraska on Dec. 1. She played eight minutes in that game, and hasn’t seen the court since.

Owusu has averaged 10.4 points and 2.7 rebounds while shooting 50% from the field this season, her first with the program. She averaged 14.3 points, 3.7 assists and shot 42.4% from the field last season at Maryland, where she spent her first three seasons.

Owusu, the two-time Big Ten tournament MVP and third-team All-American, won the Ann Meyers Drysdale award last season, which is awarded to the country’s top shooting guard.

"She had some games where she was a little bit in a lull because she was trying to figure it out, and then you kind of see — unfortunately for us — right before she got hurt, she was starting to figure it out,” Brooks said, via ESPN. “I thought she was going to get on a roll and then she gets hurt. But her attitude has been tremendous ... we can't wait to get her back."

The Hokies are 10-0 this season. They’re ranked No. 6 in the country, the highest mark in program history. Virginia Tech will host No. 5 Notre Dame on Sunday.
