Virginia Tech’s Sean Savoy is now destined for the blooper reel.

In the first half of his team’s game vs. Georgia Tech on Thursday night, Savoy was back to receive a punt with the Hokies leading 21-14 midway through the second quarter. Georgia Tech went right down the field and scored on its first two drives, so it was important for the Virginia Tech defense to finally get a stop.

But the Hokies’ defense was not off the field for very long.

Savoy hadn’t returned a punt all year, but his first try went well. The sophomore receiver reeled off a return of 21 yards to the 31-yard line. However, the return was called back because the Hokies were penalized for running into the punter. The flag allowed the Yellow Jackets to punt again.

This time, Savoy muffed the punt in probably the most embarrassing way possible. Watch this:

Savoy called for a fair catch, but it looked like the ball got to him a little quicker than he anticipated. The ball hit him right in the face mask and was recovered by the Yellow Jackets at the Virginia Tech 12-yard line. Two plays later, Georgia Tech was back in the end zone to tie the score at 21-21.

Savoy, a sophomore receiver, put his defense in a really tough spot there. The fumble ended up being a huge turning point in the game, too. From there, the Yellow Jackets scored 35 unanswered points in an eventual 49-28 victory.

Georgia Tech, now 4-4 (2-3 ACC) on the year, rushed for 464 yards and attempted only a single pass (which fell incomplete) in the win. With the loss, its first in ACC play, Virginia Tech dropped to 4-3 (3-1 ACC).
