Video allegedly depicts NMSU's Diego Pavia urinating on UNM practice field

On Sunday night, KOB 4 published portions of a video depicting what appears to be New Mexico State quarterback Diego Pavia urinating on a Lobo logo in New Mexico’s indoor practice facility.

It is unclear when the video was taken or how Pavia might have gained access to New Mexico's indoor facility.

UNM spokesman Frank Mercogliano told KOB 4 that UNM is aware of the video and notified NMSU of its existence last week. NMSU declined comment.

“Any information regarding the discipline of a student would be protected under federal privacy laws,” NMSU spokesman Justin Bannister told KOB 4.

Pavia, an Albuquerque native and Volcano Vista High School graduate, attended New Mexico Military Institute for two years and won a NJCAA National Championship in 2021. After transferring to NMSU, he won the starting job and led the Aggies last year to their first bowl victory since 2017.

Pavia made his Rio Grande Rivalry debut on Sept. 16, a 27-17 NMSU win at University Stadium. UNM increased security for the game in anticipation of high attendance for a heated rivalry.

Video of a brawl during last year's football game in Las Cruces spurred a revenge plot that ended in a deadly shootout a month later.

Former NMSU basketball player Mike Peake left his team hotel and met up with a 17-year-old female UNM student on campus, only for the former to be ambushed around 3 a.m. by three UNM students who were acquaintances of the female student.

Peake was in possession of a firearm he legally owned — though by traveling with it, that also violated university policy — and he shot and killed one of the attackers, Brandon Travis.

Travis was one of the UNM students that fought Peake in the crowd at the UNM-NMSU football game. According to the other attackers, he was embarrassed by the video’s existence and wanted revenge.
