Victory over Miami in 2021 sparked confidence of FSU football quarterback Jordan Travis

Jordan Travis' performance against rival Miami in 2021 sparked an online apparel store to commemorate one of the biggest plays in the Florida State football quarterback's career.

The "4th and 14" shirts - which also featured Travis' autograph - came after he completed a pass to Andrew Parchment to set up a game-winning touchdown in a 31-28 win over Miami in 2021 in Tallahassee.

The play and the game overall also sparked Travis' confidence and eventually put him on the path to becoming a Heisman Trophy contender.

Travis reflected following Wednesday's practice, as his time with FSU has three more regular season games, telling the media the game ranks among his favorite moments as a Seminole.

“Yeah, my confidence rose a lot," Travis said of how the 2021 Miami game changed his life. "Just being a kid that didn’t believe in himself too much and going out there in a game like that and beating Miami in the way we did, obviously boosts your confidence a lot. It did change my life a lot, definitely a lot.”

The No. 4 Seminoles (9-0, 7-0 ACC) take on the Hurricanes (6-3, 2-3) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Doak Campbell Stadium. (Broadcast: ABC).

Prior to the Miami game in 2021, Travis had played in 22 games in his college career, completing 57% of his passes for 2,018 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also added 1,362 rushing yards and 14 scores on the ground.

In the 24 games since, Travis has completed 64% of his passes for 6,136 yards, 47 touchdowns and eight interceptions. he also added 735 rushing yards and 15 TDs.

More importantly, Travis is 20-4 in that span, becoming an elite college football player after being written off by the national media and at times, his own fanbase.

On the season, Travis has completed 64% of his passes for 2,469 yards, 19 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He has also added seven scores on the ground, placing him near the top for Heisman Trophy contention.

The redshirt senior has come alive in the past month. In his past four games against Syracuse, Duke, Wake Forest and Pittsburgh, Travis has completed 93-of-144 passes (65%) for 1,271 yards, seven touchdowns and one interception. He has added 71 rushing yards and five scores on the ground in that span.

“I've changed a lot. I leadership. I'm just how I carry myself. I mean, everything that comes with playing quarterback. I mean, I've grown a lot," Travis said. "I matured a lot in those two years. The leader I am today is way different than who I was before. Yeah, man. I mean, I've always had the same heart no matter what. God said to 'Go out there and give everything he has no matter what.'

"I would say that the whole mental aspect of everything and locating the balls, all that type of stuff.”

'Not a fan of Miami'

Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jordan Travis (13) scores on a two-point conversion. The Florida State Seminoles defeated the Miami Hurricanes 31-28 Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021.

The 2017 FHSAA 3-A Player of the Year and Palm Beach Player of the Year attended The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, which is approximately 90 miles from the University of Miami.

However, that does not mean Travis was a fan of the home team in the Orange and Green. He grew up a Seminole fan.

“It’s been an honor and a blessing, obviously, especially playing for Florida State,” Travis said. “Just being at this school is a blessing. I mean, for the man upstairs, but it’s another opportunity to go out there and compete against these guys.

"Everyone knows that I’ve not been a fan of Miami for years.”

In his first career appearance against the Hurricanes in 2020, Travis completed his 1 of 2 passes for 12 yards and added seven rushes for 52 yards in a 52-10 loss in Miami.

Since then, he has owned the Hurricanes. In the 2021 game, he completed 18 of 26 passes for 274 yards and added 62 yards and two scores rushing in the 31-28 come-from-behind victory.

Last season, Travis finished 10 of 12 passing for 202 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in a 45-3 victory in Miami.

FSU enters as a 14.5 favorite, per BetOnline as of Wednesday evening. The Hurricanes lead the all-time series 35-32, but the Seminoles have won two straight in the series and nine of 13 dating back to 2010.

Travis wants to finish a perfect 3-0 against the Hurricanes as a starter and won't let his team settle for less.

“It is a football game and we’ve got to focus on the play in front of us and keep our emotions under control," Travis said. "Because you can’t let this game and emotions get the best of you. We can’t have mental mistakes, getting flags. Just got to keep the main thing the main thing.”
