Veterans Memorial graduate Krolczyk, Islanders' Aholeilei earn Southland softball honors

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Primrose Aholeilei and Southeastern's Bailey Krolczyk, a Veterans Memorial graduate, took home top Southland Conference honors in softball, announced by the league on Monday.

Krolczyk, a junior catcher for the Lions, was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year and hitter of the year after she ranked second in the conference with a .384 batting average for the season.

Krolczyk led the conference in hits (63), runs batted in (48), slugging percentage (.677), doubles (16), total bases (111) and home runs (10).

Aholeilei, a transfer from Bossier Parish CC, amassed 18 wins and 159 strikeouts in 183.2 innings pitched, far more than any other pitcher in the league.

Her 1.83 earned run average ranked second in the conference and her .228 opponents’ batting average was fourth in the SLC. She is the first Islanders player to win the Pitcher of the Year award and third A&M-Corpus Christi player to win Newcomer of the Year.

Islanders catcher Gabriella Torres also garnered All-Southland Conference honors as she was named to the second team. A&M-Corpus Christi (23-22) had its first winning regular season since 2011.

The Southland Conference softball tournament began Tuesday in Lake Charles.

The Islanders, the fifth seed, faced No. 4 Lamar.
