Vero boys tennis falls in 4A state semis, beach volleyball, boys track and field win district

Vero Beach's boys tennis team concluded its season Thursday, falling to eventual 4A state champion Miami Palmetto in the state semifinals at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs.

No. 1 doubles duo Mason Cisco and Bo Johnson were the lone winners for Vero, defeating Stefan Correa and Michael Larionov 8-4 to advance in individual bracket play.

Cisco and Johnson are set to compete in the state championship match Friday morning.

Johnson, Figge Pernfors and Walter Lloyd were each defeated in singles matches for Vero Beach.

In the state quarterfinals, Vero Beach did not even need to hit the court Wednesday as their opponent Boca Raton had to forfeit to place Vero into the state semifinals.

In No. 1 singles competition, Cisco defeated Cypress Bay’s Sebastian Mendoza 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) on Wednesday but was eliminated by Plant’s Jack Satterfield in straight sets Thursday.

Vero Beach head coach Mike Hickey said the season was all he could have wanted out of his kids with their achievements and the fun they had every step of the way.

"I couldn't have asked for a better year, the kids are so great, the parents we have are so great," Hickey said. "We went to Daytona, Miami, beating Lake Nona (in the regional final) was so great for us because they beat us in the regional final last year. It was an honor for me to coach them."

All of the other representatives at state tennis from the Treasure Coast concluded their seasons during the week.

In 3A competition, Okeechobee's girls were defeated by eventual state champion St. Thomas Aquinas 5-0 in the state quarterfinals on Monday.

For the Brahmans, at No. 1 singles, Isabella Derigo was defeated in straight sets by St. Thomas Aquinas’ Chloe Fouhety in straight sets and Derigo and Kiersten Sales were knocked out in No. 1 doubles by Fouhety and Sasha Cartagena also from Aquinas.

Okeechobee’s boys doubles’ duo of Peyton Johnson and Issac Schlosser were eliminated by Jovan Golijanin and Alessando De Bernardo of Osceola 8-5 in No. 1 doubles competition on Tuesday.

Sebastian River's Kai Edwards defeated Brock Masters of Lyman 6-2, 6-0 in No. 1 singles competition on Monday before losing to Ida Baker's Nicolas Bonaparte 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 on Tuesday for the Sharks.

In 1A, Master’s Academy’s Addison Trotter and Alena Yancy in 1A No. 1 doubles competition defeated Harper High and Kaitlyn Mang from Berkeley Prep 6-4, 6-1 on Monday before being knocked out by Emily Macri and Megan Vegas from Maclay 7-5, 6-1 on Tuesday.

Beach Volleyball

Vero Beach won their second straight district championship Thursday as they defeated Jupiter 4-1 in the District 25 final held at Fort Pierce Central High School.

Weather pushed the event back into its fourth day of competition as Vero Beach defeated Centennial in the quarterfinals and Jensen Beach in the semifinals to reach the final.

Jupiter knocked out Fort Pierce Central in a semifinal that stretched over two days, finishing Thursday to set up the title match and automatic state playoff berth.

In Vero's lineup Katy Dalton and Aracelys Sanchez at No. 2, Marie Mazzarrella and Belle Leatherman at No. 3 and Cora Darling and Marley Massey at No. 4 all were able to secure victories for Vero Beach to earn their spot into the state tournament.

The bracket for beach volleyball will be released by the FHSAA at 2 p.m. Friday as the opening round of competition begins on Tuesday, May 2.

Track and Field

Vero Beach's boys track and field team brought home the District 10-4A championship held at Harmony High School on Thursday.

Notable performers included Derrick Williams winning the 200-meter dash, Kenan Willard winning the 1,600-meter run, Anthwone Montgomery winning the discus, Michael Carter winning the long jump, Affeon Rivers winning the shot put and Efrem White winning the 110 hurdles.

Martin County's Denzel Alexander won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.99 seconds for the Tigers.

Fort Pierce Central's Gerald Thompson won the 400-meter dash, running in 49.54 and Mikoy Holmes brought home a win in the triple jump for the Cobras.

For the girls, Fort Pierce Central's Richelle Williams won the 200-meter and 400-meter dash with times of 25.20 and 57.45 seconds, Alana Veal won the long jump and triple jump and Nikayia Wilder won the discus event for the Cobras.

Vero Beach's Viviandra Phinizee swept the hurdle events, taking the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles with times of 15.17 and 1:05.50 and Camryn Reid won the shot put event.

Baseball

Jensen Beach 6, Martin County 0: Chris Knier struck out 13 in a complete-game shutout and Dylan Fatovich went 3-for-4 and scored a run in the rain-shortened win for the Falcons (17-6).

Kaiden Jones brought in a run on a sacrifice fly that put Jensen Beach ahead in the fourth inning and in the fifth, the Falcons scored four runs with a two-run single from Hudson Gardiner the big blow.

Knier allowed four hits and issued a lone walk and struck out the first six batters he faced on the night.

Cody Bennin allowed four unearned runs in four innings in the loss for the Tigers (14-8).

South Fork 9, Forest Hill 2: Grant Jones went 4-for-4, hitting a home run and adding a double in a five-RBI night to lead the Bulldogs (14-11) to victory. Zach Mastellone went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Ian Wilson went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for South Fork.
