Ventura's Beckman wins two titles at Channel League swimming finals

Ventura High sophomore Sarah Beckman set school and meet records in winning two titles at the Channel League swimming championships on Thursday at Santa Barbara High.

Beckman, who also stars for the Cougars basketball team, won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 49.08 seconds, and the 100 butterfly in 54.65. Beckman was The Star's Girls Swimmer of the Year during her freshman season.

Two local boys swimmers and one local boys relay team captured league crowns.

Rio Mesa senior Nick Santander won the 100 freestyle in 47.8 and Buena senior Nicholas Furneaux won the 100 breaststroke in 59.38.

The Ventura quartet of junior Merrick Giles, junior Owen Fonua, junior Gianno DelNagro and senior Jake Eulenhoefer captured the 400 freestyle relay title in 3:18.43.

San Marcos won the boys team title with 470.50 points. Dos Pueblos was second with 381, Ventura was third with 277, Santa Barbara took fourth at 232, and Rio Mesa was fifth with 231. Buena (176) finished sixth, Oxnard (122.50) placed seventh and Pacifica (118) was eighth.

San Marcos won the girls team title with 577 points. Dos Pueblos was second with 393, Ventura was third with 351, Santa Barbara placed fourth at 201, and Buena was fifth with 200. Oxnard (106) finished sixth, Pacifica (102) placed seventh and Rio Mesa (17) was eighth.
