Varsity Insider: Who is No. 1 in our 2023 Vermont high school football Week 2 rankings?

A wacky Week 2 gave fans football from Thursday to Monday.

Lightning and storms cells were the culprit. And now Hurricane Lee is on its way. Wacky Week 2 was everything we just experienced this summer. Can we please get a break?

Kudos to the officials, players, coaches, administrators, bus drivers, etc. that got every game in, albeit some, abbreviated. And cheers to hopefully better weather.

Who rose and who dropped after Week 2?

Week 2 rankings:

1. Burr and Burton Academy

Record: 2-0

Week 1 rankings: 3

▶ The Bulldogs walloped Middlebury in another standout McCoy performance. Jack McCoy's 364 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns (in three quarters) had BFP recalling his older brother, Joey McCoy's, 2019 semifinal showcase at Doc Collins Field. Week 3: vs. St. Johnsbury on Sept. 16.

2. Hartford High School

Record: 2-0

Week 1 rankings: 2

▶ The Hurricanes played just the first half before ending the game against Bellows Falls. Hartford won 27-7 and Brayden Trombly landed on our Athlete of the Week ballot after back-to-back standout games. Week 3: vs. BFA-St. Albans on Sept. 15.

3. Champlain Valley Union High School

Record: 1-1

Week 1 rankings: 4

▶ The Redhawks rebounded with a stifling defense in St. Albans and move up a spot. CVU has its home-opener on Saturday. Week 3: vs. SeaWolves on Sept. 16.

4. Middlebury Union High School

Record: 1-1

Week 1 rankings: 1

▶ A three-spot drop in a wet, three-quarter game that had over an hour of delays might be harsh. But it would be hard to make a case for putting the Tigers ahead of the Top 3. Week 3: vs. Rutland on Sept. 14.

5. Essex High School

Record: 2-0

Week 1 rankings: 5

▶ The Hornets began play on Thursday and didn't finish until Sunday afternoon. The four-day affair ended with a 28-12 win against the SeaWolves, in which Carter Crete had four total touchdowns. Week 3: vs. Colchester on Sept. 15.

6. Fair Haven Union High School

Record: 2-0

Week 1 rankings: 7

▶ The Slaters edged Mount Anthony 22-14 on Saturday after Friday's game was postponed. Sam Kyhill drilled three field goals to stave off a comeback bid by the Patriots. Week 3: at North Country on Sept. 16.

7. Bellows Falls Union High School

Record: 1-1

Week 1 rankings: 6

▶ The Terriers drop one slot after losing on the road to Division I's Hartford. Week 3: at Mount Mansfield on Sept. 17.

8. St. Johnsbury Academy

Record: 1-1

Week 1 rankings: 8

▶ The Hilltoppers traveled back to Colchester on Sunday for a matinee tilt with the Lakers. The offense was firing behind Carter Bunnell's 401 yards from scrimmage and four total touchdowns after stumbling in Week 1. Week 3: at Burr and Burton on Sept. 16.

9. North Country Union High School

Record: 2-0

Week 1 rankings: 9

▶ The Barrel Bowl went off without a hitch on Saturday afternoon and the Falcons came away with a 42-18 win continuing their promising 2023 season. Week 3: vs. Fair Haven on Sept. 16.

10. Windsor High School

Record: 1-0

Preseason rankings: 10

▶ After Saturday's 35-0 win against Poultney, the Yellow Jackets are outscoring opponents 75-16 to start their campaign for a third-straight title. Week 3: at Milton on Sept. 15.
