Varsity Insider: Who is No. 1 in our 2023 Vermont high school football Week 3 rankings?

There wasn't any movement in our weekly rankings as chalk ruled Week 3 of Vermont high school football.

But with that being said, Week 4 provides two matchups with Top 5 teams. Changes could be on the horizon as we reach the midway point of the regular season.

Who rose and who dropped after Week 3?

Week 3 rankings:

1. Burr and Burton Academy

Record: 3-0

Week 2 rankings: 1

▶ Jack McCoy set a program record with six rushing touchdowns as the Bulldogs stomped out St. Johnsbury 48-21. BBA has outscored opponents 121-56 this fall. Week 4: at Hartford on Sept. 22.

2. Hartford High School

Record: 3-0

Week 2 rankings: 2

▶ Ezra Mock's three straight touchdowns gave Hartford a 20-7 lead at home as the Hurricanes cruised in the second half against BFA-St. Albans. Week 4: vs. Burr and Burton on Sept. 22.

3. Champlain Valley Union High School

Record: 2-1

Week 2 rankings: 3

▶ Champlain Valley had everything working against Burlington/South Burlington on Saturday. The Redhawks forced five turnovers and quarterback Ollie Cheer supplied five total touchdowns. Week 4: vs. St. Johnsbury on Sept. 23.

4. Middlebury Union High School

Record: 2-1

Week 2 rankings: 4

▶ The Tigers' bounce back win on Thursday (41-0 against Rutland) included 190 rush yards and 3 TDs from Jackson Gillett in the first half. Week 4: at Essex on Sept. 22.

5. Essex High School

Record: 3-0

Week 2 rankings: 5

▶ The Hornets lost Carter Crete to an injury on the first offensive drive of the game, but were still able to scrape out a gutsy 10-6 win against Colchester to remain perfect. Week 4: vs. Middlebury on Sept. 22.

6. Fair Haven Union High School

Record: 3-0

Week 2 rankings: 6

▶ The game that I had circled this week was Fair Haven and North Country in Newport. The Slaters, outside of a pair of turnovers, stunned the Falcons 42-10 to grab control of the division. And a personal thank you to the Slaters for putting me at the top of our Fearless Free Press Football Forecast. Week 4: at Lyndon on Sept. 23.

7. Bellows Falls Union High School

Record: 2-1

Week 2 rankings: 7

▶ A slow start for the Terriers led to a 19-8 halftime lead against Mount Mansfield on Sunday. But they returned the opening kick of the second half 99 yards and kept the Cougars at bay late for the road win. The red-hot Raiders are on tap. Week 4: vs. U-32 on Sept. 22.

8. St. Johnsbury Academy

Record: 1-2

Week 2 rankings: 8

▶ The aforementioned loss to our No. 1 team has the Hilltoppers as the lowest-seeded Division I team and it doesn't get easier this week. ... Week 4: at Champlain Valley on Sept. 23.

9. North Country Union High School

Record: 2-1

Week 2 rankings: 9

▶ The Falcons have a chance to regain QPR points against the D-I Bobwhites at home. Week 4: vs. BFA-St. Albans on Sept. 22.

10. Windsor High School

Record: 3-0

Week 2 rankings: 10

▶ The Yellow Jackets' win streak stands at 25 games after the 33-6 triumph against Milton. Week 4: at Mount Mansfield on Sept. 23.
