Vanoss sisters lead Lady Wolves past Asher
Jan. 16—ASHER — The Vanoss Lady Wolves used a smothering defense and pulled away from Asher for a lopsided 46-17 win in a Friday night road game.
Vanoss, ranked No. 7 in Class 2A, won for the eighth straight time to improve to 16-2, on the year. The Lady Indians, No. 20 in Class B, fell to 13-7.
In the boys game, Asher won the rubber matchup 55-44. The Indians, ranked No. 16 in Class B, improved to 13-7, on the year. Asher had defeated Vanoss 46-45 in the Pontotoc Conference Tournament and the Wolves had exacted a measure of revenge with a 52-45 victory over the Indians in the finals of the Coleman Christmas Classic.
Vanoss, No. 13 in Class 2A, fell to 11-7 after dropping three of their past four outings.
GIRLS
Vanoss 46, Asher 17
The Lady Wolves led 10-2 after the first period and 23-6 by halftime. Vanoss outscored the Lady Indians 18-7 in the third frame to pull away.
Sisters Avery Ellis and Livi Ellis paced Vanoss with 11 points each. Livi Ellis hit a pair of 3-pointers and Avery Ellis sank one 3-point shot.
Zoey Cagle also hit double figures for the Lady Wolves with 10 points, including a pair of triples. Eryn Khoury followed with nine points, including one 3-pointer.
Asher's Alexis Johnson scored a team-high seven points.
Vanoss made just 6-of-13 free shots while Asher finished 4-of-6 from the stripe.
BOYS
Asher 55, Vanoss 44
The Indians led just 14-13 after a tight first quarter but outscored Vanoss 17-11 in the second period to build a 31-24 halftime advantage.
Asher began to pull away with an 18-8 run in the third quarter that made it 49-32.
Vanoss outscored Asher 12- 6 in the fourth period and held the Indians without a field goal but couldn't climb out of the third-quarter hole.
The Indians went a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and finished an impressive 21-of-24 overall from the stripe. Vanoss made 9-of-14 free shots.
Mikey Vanschuyver led all scorers with 18 points for Asher. Andrew Overstreet was next with 14 points and went 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Tristan Reese followed with 13 points.
Dyllan Brown led the VHS offense with 14 points. Tucker Miller was next with eight points for the Wolves.
