Vanderbilt football to donate proceeds from Hawai'i opener to Maui fire relief

Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea watches players stretch during an NCAA college football practice Tuesday, August 2, 2023, in Nashville, Tenn.

Vanderbilt will donate a portion of ticket sales for its football opener against Hawai'i to a foundation providing relief for those affected by the Maui wildfires, the program announced Wednesday.

That money will be donated to the Maui Strong Fund via the Hawai'i Community Foundation. According to the organization's website, the Maui Strong Fund supports "evolving needs, including shelter, food, financial assistance, and other services as identified by our partners doing critical work on Maui."

The Commodores will face the Rainbow Warriors in their season opener Aug. 26 (6:30 p.m. CT, SEC Network). The University of Hawai'i is located on the island of O'ahu, which was not impacted by the wildfires. The Rainbow Warriors' roster lists two players from Maui, including one from the hardest-hit town of Lahaina.

At least 106 people died as a result of the wildfires Aug. 8. Although an exact cause has yet to be determined, high winds and dry weather contributed to the spread. Much of Lahaina was destroyed in the blaze.
