Valwood aims to end John Milledge streak

Nov. 29—HAHIRA — In the culmination of their season, the Valwood Valiants face one of their most formidable opponents yet, John Milledge Academy from Milledgeville. John Milledge comes into the championship game as the four-time defending state champion.

The state championship is set for Thursday at Five Star Stadium at Macon's Mercer University. Kickoff is 8 p.m. Valwood School will close on Friday, Dec. 1, to allow students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to attend the state finals.

Valiants head coach Brad Wells appreciates the school and community's all-in support of this year's team. "I couldn't ask for better support from the school. It was evident when I came here how important football was. You can feel the excitement in the halls."

The undefeated Trojans hold an overall record of 12-0 this year, often dominating the opposing team. John Milledge will roll into the championship game against Valwood with more than 60 wins in a row. It is safe to say this will be a big-time game for fans to watch

After sweeping the region, Valwood tops the GIAA AAAA/AAA District 3 football standings. The Valiants' seven-win streak includes the defeat of Brookwood (77-42), Tiftarea Academy (41-0), Southland Academy (49-0), Terrell Academy (52-13), and Deerfield-Windsor (52-6).

Wells sees the upcoming championship game as an opportunity for the senior leaders on the team to shine.

"It's gonna be a heck of a challenge for our team," he said, "but these kids have never backed down all year, so we're looking forward to it."

Senior De'mar Riley leads the team in receiving (41.2 yards per game) and rushing yards (113.3 Y/G) per game as well as receiving touchdowns (6 REC). Seniors Landen Ryan, David Griffin and Dallas Hatfield average 6+ tackles a game.

The postseason is a busy time for teams. Not only do they prepare for a new opponent each week, but athletes also navigate their next steps as they prepare to enter the college football level. Coach Wells sees excellent potential in the class of 2024. "We're setting up some visits in December, and we're hopeful we'll have a couple of seniors that will have the opportunity to play after high school."
