UWS women's hockey gets playoffs off to bad start

Feb. 23—EAU CLAIRE — Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Sophie Rausch made a big statement to start Game 1 of the Blugolds' Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff semifinal series against Wisconsin-Superior.

She scored twice in the first period and four times in the game as the Blugolds rolled to a 6-2 victory on Friday, Feb. 23.

The hosts controlled most of the play on Friday, holding a 38-15 shot advantage. Madisyn Krumholz started up the scoring before Rausch scored twice, 2:22 apart, to make it 3-0 after 20 minutes. Rausch completed a natural hat trick while UWEC was shorthanded to make it 4-0, then added a fourth goal 29 seconds into the third period.

Gaby Andreacchi scored on the power play in the second period for UWS and Jada LeBlanc had a late consolation goal. Rose Beeman made 32 saves.

UWS (8-17-1) needs to win Saturday's Game 2 plus a subsequent mini-game to advance to next weekend's championship.
