USD men's and women's basketball teams both post Summit League routs against Omaha

The Omaha Mavericks came to the Sanford Coyote Sports Center on Saturday and ran into a buzzsaw, as South Dakota dominated their Summit League game from start to finish in a 105-70 thrashing on the Coyotes’ home floor.

Mason Archambault score a career-high 25 points to lead the Yotes, hitting two of their Division I-era school record 17 made 3-pointers to lead six from USD in double figures. Archambault was 15-of-16 at the line, where USD got back to doing what they do best, scoring 30 points at the stripe on 37 attempts (81%). The Coyotes were a blistering 17-of-30 from beyond the arc, shot 52 percent from the floor overall, held a 38-26 rebounding edge and committed just nine turnovers. They led 57-33 at halftime and just kept pouring it on in the second. USD went over 100 points in a game for the first time this season. It was their third win in six days, as the Coyotes have followed an 0-3 start in league play with three straight wins.

Tasos Kamateros and Kruz Perrott-Hunt had 15 points each for USD, while Keaton Kutcher and Erik Oliver had 11 apiece and Hunter Goodrick added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Kamateros had eight assists. Frankie Fidler and Felix Lemetti had 11 points each to lead the Mavs (3-16, 2-6).

USD (10-7, 3-3) will be on the road this week, visiting Western Illinois and St. Thomas on Thursday and Saturday.

USD women's basketball stays perfect in Summit League play

The USD Coyote women remained one of the hottest teams in Division I basketball on Saturday, improving to 7-0 in Summit League play with their 12th straight win, a 68-45 road win at Omaha.

All seven of USD’s conference wins have been by double digit margins, and Saturday’s was the sixth of the seven to be by 23 points or more.

Leading by just a point after one quarter, the Coyotes dominated the next two stanzas to take control, outscoring the Mavericks 43-23 across the second and third quarters to give themselves a comfortable advantage heading to the fourth.

It was, as it has been during their streak, a strong performance by coach Dawn Plitzuweit’s team on both ends of the floor. The Coyotes shot 50 percent from the floor, made 7-of-15 from 3-point land and had 18 assists on 24 field goals (with another four makes coming on second chances). Liv Korngable had 18 points to lead the charge, while Chloe Lamb had 12 points and five rebounds. Hannah Sjerven had eight points, six boards and two blocks and Maddie Krull added seven points and three steals.

Defensively, USD forced the Mavs to miss two-thirds of their shots and forced 19 turnovers, which the Yotes turned into 30 points. Grace Cave and Mariah Murdie had 12 points each to lead the Mavs (6-11, 2-6).

The Coyotes (14-4 overall) return home this week to face Western Illinois (Thursday) and St. Thomas (Saturday).
