USC Upstate baseball falls to Campbell in Big South Tournament championship game

USC Upstate baseball fell to Campbell 3-2 in the Big South Conference Tournament championship game on Saturday at Truist Point in High Point, North Carolina.

It was the final game of the season for the Spartans (38-22).

Thanks to a one-run six-inning outing from Upstate pitcher Jake Cubbler, the Spartans controlled most of the game. That is until the bottom of the eighth when Campbell right fielder Lawson Harrill hit his 22nd home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2.

Campbell (44-13), the winners of five-straight Big South titles, weren't done quite yet in the inning though. On the very next at-bat, catcher Grant Knipp smashed another one-run homer, which proved to be the winning run for Campbell.

Upstate's top hitter, Grant Sherrod went 3-4 from the plate, and catcher Jace Rinehart was 2-4 with an RBI.

Going into the first game of the double-elimination tournament championship, Upstate needed to win two games to win the title — after the Camels beat the Spartans 12-3 on Friday.

Campbell needed just one win to take home the title, as it did not lose on its way to the championship round.
