What USC needs to know about Sam Hartman after first game with Notre Dame

Fighting Irish Wire is the place to go for USC fans who want to learn more about Notre Dame. The Irish face USC on October 14 in South Bend. Get the inside story on Notre Dame in the six weeks until that showdown in Indiana.

We asked Fighting Irish Wire editor Nick Shepkowski what impressed him the most about Sam Hartman against Navy. The new Notre Dame quarterback gives the Irish a big upgrade at the most important position on the field, but what did Shepkowski see in Notre Dame’s season opener which offers specific reason for the Irish to feel confident this year?

“His ability to throw under pressure,” Shepkowski told us. “It’s been a long time since Notre Dame had a quarterback who didn’t immediately tuck and run upon pressure.  Hartman keeps his eyes down field and is still looking downfield instead of thinking run.  That wasn’t the case with Drew Pyne, Tyler Buchner, Ian Book, or Jack Coan (even though Coan was a statue back there).”
