The best tennis players in the world head for Flushing Meadows for the US Open, the final grand slam of the tennis year. Defending champions Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz are set to be the top seeds with strong fields in both the women’s and men’s draws.

Novak Djokovic is also set to return to New York having missed out on competing last year due to the Covid-19 vaccination policy of the United States, and will hunt a record-extending 24th major title. Home favourite Serena Williams will be absent after bowing out of tennis at last year’s US Open, but sister Venus has been handed a wildcard at the age of 43.

Former British winner Emma Raducanu will be unable to compete through injury, but there is hope for Andy Murray who could recover from a hip injury in time for the first round which starts on 28 August. Every match will be held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Via AP: Novak Djokovic’s return to the U.S. Open after missing it last year because he wasn’t vaccinated against COVID-19 will come against an opponent who never has played in the tournament, while defending women’s champion Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff were drawn Thursday into a possible quarterfinal matchup.Top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz, the 2022 men’s champion at Flushing Meadows, and No. 6 seed Jannik Sinner could meet in the men’s quarterfinals again. That was the round in which Alcaraz’s thrilling five-set victory over rival Sinner last year ended at 2:50 a.m., the latest finish in U.S. Open history.

Djokovic, a 36-year-old from Serbia who has won three of his men’s-record 23 Grand Slam titles in New York, couldn’t enter the tournament a year ago because unvaccinated foreign citizens were barred from flying into the United States. He returned to the country for the first time in two years to play in the hard-court tune-up event in Cincinnati, where he outlasted Alcaraz in a thrilling final last weekend that spanned nearly four hours. In the first round next week, Djokovic will take on Alexandre Muller, a 26-year-old from France who is ranked 85th and will be making his main-draw debut at Flushing Meadows. Muller lost in the opening round of qualifying in 2021 and 2022. He has not had much luck in Grand Slam draws lately, forced to face Alcaraz at Wimbledon and Sinner at the French Open.

Iga Swiatek will take on the world number 98 Rebecca Peterson from Sweden in the opening round.

But in the same quarter of the draw, there is one to look out for. Caroline Wozniacki could play against Petra Kvitova in the second round.

The 33-year-old Wozniacki retired in 2020 after a 15-year career including 30 titles, and she has played two US Open finals.

But after having two children, she has returned to the sport and will look to make her mark at the highest level at Flushing Meadows.

The women’s draw is far more open than the men’s and there are lots of matches to look forward to, even in the early rounds.

Over to the women’s draw now, and Aryna Sabalenka has been drawn in the same quarter as Ons Jabeur.

That could make for a thrilling fourth round clash.

Venus Williams, who has been given a wildcard for the tournament, will play Paula Badosa in the first round.

Badosa is unlikely to be a simple opponent, ranked 46 in the world aged 25, she has briefly been ranked second back in 2022.
