Urban Meyer spoke to Russell Wilson before hiring Darrell Bevell

Here’s an interesting non-draft tidbit of interest this week. According to the Around the NFL staff over at NFL.com, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer reached out to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson before hiring offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.

“Who will be calling plays for Lawrence (likely) in Jacksonville? Thanks to a certain NFC West quarterback, it’ll be Darrell Bevell,” the staff wrote in their Tuesday news and notes piece. “According to NFL Network’s James Palmer, Meyer had a lengthy conversation with Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson regarding Bevell this offseason, and the talk had a huge impact on the first-year Jags coach’s decision to hire the former Seahawks and Lions offensive coordinator.”

Bevell spent seven years in Seattle as the Seahawks offensive coordinator before he was let go after the 2017 season, grooming Wilson since he was a young rookie – even attending his pro day at Wisconsin before the Seahawks selected the quarterback in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft.

“Wilson told Meyer about Bevell’s ability to get him ready to perform at a high level very quickly during his rookie season, per Palmer,” the staff writers continued. “The Seahawks QB completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 3,118 yards, 26 TDs and just 10 INTs in his 2012 rookie campaign under Bevell en route to a Pro Bowl bid.”

Now . . . back to the NFL draft, which is set to kick off Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m. PT. Everything you need to know to catch the action can be found here.
