'An Urban Meyer puff piece': Social media reacts to portrayal in 'Swamp Kings' documentary
The trailer for the third volume of Netflix's "Untold" documentary series ends with Urban Meyer, the head coach on the 2006 and 2008 national championship Florida Gators, issuing a promise for viewers.
"This is gonna be un-(expletive)-believable."
The previews for "Swamp Kings," the four-part documentary on the mid- to late 2000s Gators squads, had college football fans excited both in and outside Gainesville. The teams led by Meyer and Heisman-winning quarterback Tim Tebow brought on-field glory back to Florida football, while also including a long list of off-field drama from partying to criminal activity. And then there's the issue of Aaron Hernandez, the Gators tight end who was later convicted of murder (and who was the focus of another Netflix documentary).
Unfortunately (for some fans, at least), "Swamp Kings" focused mostly on the Gators' play. While the documentary series took viewers behind the scenes for some grueling workout clips, Hernandez is mentioned only once over 3 hours. The Pouncey twins, Percy Harvin, the Cam Newton laptop incident that led to the future Heisman winner being kicked off the team? Not much of a mention.
Perhaps worst of all in critics' eyes is how Meyer is featured. His training regimen doesn't get challenged much beyond a couple passing quotes, and his treatment of players was a big part of what led to his firing after less than a season as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars a decade later.
"An emotional Meyer talked about the death of Avery Atkins in 2007, a year after leaving the Gators, as the reason he wouldn’t kick players off the team," Joe Lucia wrote for Awful Announcing. "That’s just about all the coverage the negative aspects of the team get."
Social media reacts to Urban Meyer and "Swamp Kings"
Here's a rundown of some of the criticism on social media:
There’s been a very deliberate campaign to rehabilitate Urban Meyer’s coaching image over the last 18 months and I think it’s best if we all collectively ignore it. https://t.co/Ai8ixuDzIG

We could start with a documentary on Urban Meyer’s Florida Gators https://t.co/qYEKqE8SLv

Swamp Kings was an Urban Meyer public relations victory. After his disastrous season in Jacksonville, he needed an image cleaning. I think he was so open to doing the documentary to accomplish that.

Watched ‘Swamp Kings’ last night.
It was whatever. I thought we’d get to hear first hand about all the scandal, cover-ups and illegal activity that took place behind the scenes.
Instead we’re force fed to think Urban Meyer isn’t that bad of a guy.— Nick Hicks (@PER4ORM) August 23, 2023
Swamp Kings really failed on depicting what really went on in Florida during the Urban Meyer era. There should have been a whole ass episode on just the Pouncey bros and Aaron Hernandez and the doc didn’t tap into any of it.

I think #SwampKings might be a tipping point for sports “documentaries” (or at least the Untold series).
Those Florida teams are *most* famous for their off-field issues and instead the series is just Urban Meyer’s version of The Last Dance. https://t.co/nJUpBq9GN4— Ben Axelrod (@BenAxelrod) August 23, 2023
Me founding out this is a Urban Meyer puff piece https://t.co/292He4gZTS pic.twitter.com/CmmVxauEvn

Twitter reacts to Netflix documentaries
Netflix wasn't immune from criticism after "Swamp Kings." Viewers pointed out the company's history of seemingly soft stories about their subjects.
We need to talk about how Netflix "documentaries" have just become PR for their subjects.
- Harry & Meghan
- Jake Paul
- Johnny Manziel
- Urban Meyer
And now we're getting a 10-part doc on Jerry Jones that Netflix paid $50 MILLION for.
Take a guess how he'll be portrayed... pic.twitter.com/NePY8L1Ab3— Jim Weber (@JimMWeber) August 23, 2023
Alright so these “untold” documentaries, while entertaining, are the worst works of journalism in human history and are merely puff pieces for their main characters (Urban Meyer/ Manziel) like LMAO you are NOT going to convince me to be sympathetic towards URBAN MEYER 😂
