Upset, showdown win create 3-way tie for KLAA West girls basketball lead

KLAA West girls basketball has been so balanced this season that even the last-place team could have a say in who emerges from the chaos holding the championship trophy.

Novi’s upset of Brighton and Howell’s victory at Canton have created a three-way tie for first place with two games remaining for each team.

Brighton, coming off a huge victory over Howell, lost 46-35 to a Novi team that entered the night with a 1-10 record in the division.

After falling a game out of first, Howell moved back into a tie for the top by beating Canton for the second time this season, 58-51.

The night began with Brighton and Canton tied for first. Now Brighton, Howell and Canton share the top spot with 8-4 records.

Hartland and Salem are also still in the hunt, each team one game off the pace with 7-5 records.

Alison Farr scored 14 points, while Hannah Ralko and Gabby Piepho each had 11 for Howell.

Brighton’s four-game winning streak was snapped by Novi. Sophia Heady had eight points and six rebounds, while Gracyn Houck had seven points for the Bulldogs.

Izzy DePestel’s 15 points led Hartland.

Washtenaw Christian 49, Charyl Stockwell 32

Lucy Fuchs scored 12 points for Stockwell.

Skiing

KLAA championship

Brighton put its four scoring skiers in the top six in slalom and giant slalom to easily win the league championship by a 35-95 margin over Novi at Alpine Valley.

Vivian Flynn was second in slalom and fourth in giant slalom, Brenna Waid was third in giant slalom and fifth in slalom, Cecilia Pruski was fourth in slalom and fifth in giant slalom, and Sara Mayer was sixth in giant slalom and ninth in slalom for the Bulldogs.

Hartland’s Allison Steffe was seventh in slalom and eighth in giant slalom.

Howell was fourth and Hartland was sixth in the team standings.

In the boys meet, Brighton was second by a 39-91 margin to Northville.

Howell’s Alex Cotton was slalom and was second in giant slalom.

Brighton’s John Popov won giant slalom and took ninth in slalom. Erik DeKeyser was fifth in slalom, while Dane DeKeyser was ninth in giant slalom and 10th in slalom for the Bulldogs.

Wyatt Colliton was fifth in giant slalom, Robert Wisniewski was seventh in giant slalom, and Collin DeGrand took eighth in slalom and 10th in giant slalom for Hartland.

Hartland was third and Howell fifth as teams.

Boys basketball

Brighton 57, Novi 48

Vince Salmon had 15 points and 10 rebounds, leading Brighton to its sixth straight victory.

Cole Rooney had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Grant Hetherton had nine points and four assists for the Bulldogs.

Brighton moved into sole possession of second place in the KLAA West at 7-5. Canton, which visits Brighton Friday, has clinched the division at 12-0.

Charyl Stockwell 49, Webberville 37

Nik Nicaj had 16 points, Drew Goodwin 14 points, and Parker Olejniczak eight points, five assists and six steals for Stockwell.
