Updates to Week 2 Brevard high school football scheduled games: Tropical Storm Idalia, Viera back

The resumption of team activities at one school and the march of Tropical Storm Idalia toward the west coast of Florida are on the horizon for Friday's high school football schedule with Brevard County teams.

Viera High will open its regular season Friday at Satellite High according to a Sunday release from Brevard Public Schools. Hawks varsity and junior varsity football activities were suspended the previous Sunday after a "hazing" video surfaced, leading to the suspension of an unannounced number of players and the relieving of head coach Shane Staples from his duties indefinitely.

Meanwhile, teams for both Cocoa and Titusville could be impacted Friday by a storm path that affects travel plans.

The Tigers are scheduled to host Venice in this, Week 2 of the season, but Sarasota County schools will be out Tuesday and Wednesday as Idalia hovers in the Gulf of Mexico. Current forecasts predict the storm will make landfall north of Tampa. Cocoa head coach Ryan Schneider said the two schools are in touch and monitoring the situation.

It's a similar story for the Titusville High football team, which is scheduled to travel to play Jacksonville-area Yulee. Athletic director Jason Berley said that game was on as of midday Monday, depending on the outcome of the weather.

At Viera, Anthony Gulla will serve as interim head coach. He's been the quarterback coach there and has more than three decades of coaching experience. Previous coaching stops include Palm Bay and Heritage in Brevard as well as Dr. Phillips, Colonial and Olympia.
