UNI wrestling earns 800th dual victory in program history by beating Wyoming

Northern Iowa wrestling had a solid day in Lincoln, Neb., on Saturday taking down a pesky Wyoming team 36-6 and dropping a competitive dual by criteria to No. 7 Nebraska 18-17.

The Panthers' dual win over Wyoming was the 800th in program history and the most points UNI has scored against the Cowboys since 2008 (40). They won eight of 10 matches, including 197-pound redshirt freshman Wyatt Voelker (ranked at No. 19) winning his first dual match of the year over No. 21 Joey Novak in a 5-3 decision to highlight a solid performance for the Panthers.

The main event was UNI's tussle with the No. 7 Cornhuskers. UNI had a stellar performance, picking up three ranked wins. No. 12 Cael Happel took down No. 6 Brock Hardy at 141 pounds. Trailing 8-5 with less than 20 seconds to go in regulation, Happel spun out of what was essentially a cradle and recorded a takedown to extend the match. Right away, Happel fired in overtime for three points to stun the Cornhusker faithful.

At 157 pounds, No. 12 Ryder Downey for UNI had the biggest upset of the day, beating No. 3 Peyton Robb 6-5. Robb attempted to get a last-second takedown, but Downey latched on to Robb's lower half and rode out the remainder of the clock for a win.

By the end of the dual, both teams had been deducted a point for their conduct and were tied, with each team winning five bouts. With that tiebreaker holding, the match then is decided by the highest number of matches won by fall, forfeit for disqualification. Nebraska's Silas Allred pinned Voelker at 197, so Nebraska won by criteria.
