Undefeated Vikettes basketball travels to New York

Dec. 28—VALDOSTA — The Lowndes High School Vikettes are attending a New Year's Eve Ball basketball tournament at South Shore High School in New York.

The Vikettes take a nine-game win streak into the trip that began back in mid-November with a 67-44 win against Central High School, a 70-36 win versus Bainbridge, 53-36 win against Episcopal School of Jacksonville, a 64-36 win against Lee County, and a 77-14 versus Berrien to round out the first month of play.

December continued to be fortuitous for the Vikettes with five more wins versus Brunswick and another over Bainbridge and Berrien.

When discussing the exciting trip, head coach Antonia Tookes thanked the fans and the school community for their support. Tookes also praised the overall efforts of everyone involved with the program. "Our community has poured into us to be able to pay for the expenses. Our principal and athletic director are both really excited about it."

The Vikettes basketball team has always been a strong competitor in their seasons; However, it seems stronger than in several years. Their season's closest game was against Brunswick High School, which ended 50-36.

Coach Tookes relates the team's success to hard work and dedication.

"We have some great players and focused them on playing as a team and not as a 'me' group. We don't care who's scoring; we just share the ball and have fun." Tookes wanted to highlight the standout performances of Shamiah Webb, Kaci Demps, and Aryana Thomas to the team's focus on the outcome and not the individuals.

Soon after the team returns from their trek up north, the Vikettes will face their local rivals of Valdosta High School on Jan. 13th, 2024 in the first regional game of the season.
