UFC on ESPN 39 post-event facts: Ricky Turcios’ rough striking numbers enter record books

After International Fight Week took over the MMA world, UFC on ESPN 39 on Saturday proved to be something of a hangover card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Rafael Fiziev (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) put a highlight on the end of a long night of fights, though, when he scored a fifth-round knockout of former UFC champ Rafael dos Anjos (32-14 MMA, 20-12 UFC) to extend his winning streak in the lightweight division to six consecutive fights.

The UFC Promotional Guidelines Compliance payout for the event totaled $157,500.

Debuting fighters went 0-1 at the event.

Fiziev, [autotag]Chase Sherman[/autotag], [autotag]Jamie Mullarkey[/autotag] and [autotag]Michael Johnson[/autotag] earned $50,000 UFC on ESPN 39 fight-night bonuses.

The UFC sold VIP tickets to fans for UFC on ESPN 39, but the promotion did not make public the total number of tickets sold or the gate.

Betting favorites went 7-4 on the card.

Betting favorites improved to 15-8 in UFC headliners this year.

Total fight time for the 11-bout card was 2:27:50.

Rafael Fiziev def. Rafael dos Anjos

Fiziev’s six-fight UFC winning streak at lightweight is the fourth-longest active streak in the division behind Charles Oliveira (11), Islam Makhachev (nine) and Beneil Dariush (seven).

Fiziev has earned nine of his 12 career victories by stoppage.

Dos Anjos fell to 1-1 since he returned to the UFC lightweight division in November 2020.

Dos Anjos has suffered four of his 12 UFC losses by stoppage.

Sherman (14-10 MMA, 4-9 UFC) improved to 2-4 since he returned to the UFC for a second stint in May 2020.

Sherman has earned 14 of his 15 career victories by stoppage.

Sherman has earned all three of his UFC stoppage victories by knockout.

[autotag]Jared Vanderaa[/autotag]’s (12-9 MMA, 1-5 UFC) four-fight losing skid is the longest of his career. He hasn’t earned a victory since May 2021.

Vanderaa has suffered four of his five UFC losses by stoppage.

Turcios landed 11.5 percent of his significant strike attempts, the fourth-lowest single-fight rate in UFC history among bouts with at least 150 strike attempts. Only Maryna Moroz (6.8 percent at UFC Fight Night 92), Wilson Reis (9.5 percent at UFC on FOX 24) and Justin Wren (10.7 percent at TUF 10 Finale) had worse such performances.

Jamie Mullarkey def. Michael Johnson

Mullarkey (15-5 MMA, 3-3 UFC) earned his first decision victory since Feb. 1, 2014 – a span of 3,080 days and 17 fights.

Johnson (20-18 MMA, 12-14 UFC) fell to 1-4 since he returned to the lightweight division in October 2019.

Johnson fell to 4-10 in his past 14 fights dating back to August 2015.

Johnson has suffered seven of his 14 UFC losses by decision.

Johnson’s 11 knockdowns landed in UFC lightweight competition are tied with Donald Cerrone for second-most in divisional history behind Melvin Guillard (13).
