Tyler Owens broad jump: Texas Tech football DB records second-longest distance at NFL combine

Texas Tech football's Tyler Owens made history at the NFL combine on Friday.

The former Red Raiders defensive back, who started his career at Texas, registered a 12-foot, 2-inch broad jump on Friday, which, according to the NFL, is the second longest ever at the event.

In fact, Owens' mark was only an inch short of the combine record, which is also the world record. Former UConn standout and current Miami Dolphins defensive back Byron Jones set that mark in 2015.

Owens made headlines on Thursday after he said he told reporters during his media session that he doesn't believe in space

"I don't believe in space," Owens said in a video posted on X. "I'm real religious, so I think we're alone right now. I don't think there's other planets and other stuff like that."

But it's clear he's able to make headlines with his incredible athletic prowess. On top of his 12-2 broad jump, he also turned in a 41-inch vertical leap. He unfortunately had a groin injury that kept him from running the 40-yard dash, however.

Owens finished his senior season with 37 total tackles and two pass deflections.
