Two new top teams highlight the Des Moines Register's Week 2 high school football rankings

Teams from across Iowa competed in the first high school football games of the 2023 season, and the results led to a bit of shakeup in the rankings.

This week’s high school football rankings feature a new No. 1 in Class 5A, after Dowling Catholic put together an all-around solid performance from all units and beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 38-21. The Maroons overtook preseason No. 1 Southeast Polk after the Rams beat Valley, 24-18.

In Class 4A, Xavier took over the top spot after thumping Waverly-Shell Rock, 41-6. That unseated Lewis Central, which fell to No. 2, after managing a 21-20 win over Harlan.

There are some new teams across all seven polls, but this is still anyone’s game heading into Week 2. We’ll see if the newcomers can stick around or if the shuffling continues before Week 3.
