What to know for 2023

West Oso broke new ground after reaching the playoffs for the first time in three seasons in 2022. First-year head coach Kenneth Johnson is hoping to build from last year's success with a core of returning players, including quarterback Devin Martinez and receiver Dashawn Trimble. The Bears' biggest challenge will be replacing star running back Elijah Huff, who ran for 2,580 yards and 31 touchdowns last season. Johnson, who was hired in March, previously served as the offensive coordinator at Veterans Memorial. The veteran coach will rely on Martinez, alongside 18 returning lettermen to take a step forward in 2023.

Coach Kenneth Johnson on the 2023 season

"It’s going really well. I’m really enjoying how the kids are locked in and buying in. The kids want to win and I came in a good situation where there’s a great foundation. We’re ready to move forward and we have key returners with Devin (Martinez), Dashawn (Trimble) and Julius Ortero ..., plus a lot of guys who are experienced. It's a good thing the guys that weren’t starters at least had a lot of playing time. The guys are buying in and understanding how to win and that’s the biggest thing. They are winners at heart and now it’s time to put it all into motion."
