Tuesday Seacoast roundup: Pinkerton's Brander, Marshall hand Portsmouth boys first loss

PORTSMOUTH - Christian Brander and Jackson Marshall combined for 71 points and the Pinkerton Academy boys basketball team handed Portsmouth its first loss of the season with a 96-76 win on Tuesday in a Division I game at Stone Gymnasium.

Pinkerton improved to 7-0 on the season, while Portsmouth is 4-1.

"First and foremost, Pinkerton is the real deal, they're as good as advertised," Portsmouth head coach Tyrece Gibbs said. "Proud of my guys' effort in the second half, they kept fighting and they hung in there."

Sophomore Ryan Swartz led Portsmouth with 20 points, while Isaiah Reis had 17, and Princeton Daniel 13. Bander connected on 11 3-pointers and had a game-high 36 points for the Astros, while Marshall had 35.

BOYS BASKETBALL

SOMERSWORTH - Freshman Cole McClure had 16 points and senior Will Mollica had 14 as St. Thomas Aquinas improved to 7-1 with this Division III win.

Carson Couperthwait had 12 rebounds for the Saints, who led 30-10 at halftime.

York 44

Freeport 43

FREEPORT, Maine - Class A Freeport's last-chance shot missed, and the Class B Wildcats held on for the win, improving to 9-1 on the season.

Ben Brown's 3-pointer, his only basket of the game, gave York a 44-39 lead with 1:50 left.

Lukas Bouchard led York with 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Derek Parsons had eight points.

Marshwood 46

Brunswick 35

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine - Ryan Essex scored a game-high 15 points and Liam Tiernan added 14 for Marshwood in this Class A South contest.

Ronan Garrett added nine points and 14 rebounds for the Hawks.

Oyster River 63

DURHAM - Matt Jernigan's 19 points and four steals led Oyster River (4-3) in Division II action.

Jack Carpenter added 10 points and four steals in the win, while Luca Varney (nine points, six rebounds), and Eli Pierce (seven points, 10 rebounds) both contributed.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pinkerton 74

DERRY - Syd Gerossie's season-high 28 points helped Pinkerton remain unbeaten with this Division I win over the Clippers, who are now 3-2 on the season.

Avery Romps led the Clippers with 12 point, while Maddie MacCannell had 10, Bridget Emery nine and Margaret Montplaisir eight.

The Clippers, who trailed 31-20 at the half, cut what was once a 20-point third-quarter lead down to six late in the period, but consecutive 3-pointers by the Astros' Emily Leonard, Hayden Lecesse and Alex White sent the home team into the fourth up 57-43.

York 50

YORK, Maine - Nya Avery had 16 points, and McKayla Kortes had 15 as Class B York improved to 7-3 with this win over Class A Freeport.

Kortes added 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, while Ava Brent had eight points.

NEW IPSWICH - Jaela Stockbower had 15 points, and Tatiana Stockbower had 11 for PCA (4-4) in its Division IV win.

GIRLS TRACK

Portsmouth quartets win two events at Wildcat Relays 

DURHAM – The foursome of Ella Carter, Lily Patterson, Mariam Nada and Lily Jenkins placed first in the 55-meter shuttle dash in a time of 28.75 seconds at the Wildcat Relays.

And the quartet of Jocelyn Bancroft, Molly Flynn, Ginger Vinciguerra, and Nada placed first in the 55-meter hurdle shuttle in 37.76.

Avery Timerman, Vinciguerra, Patterson, and Jenkins placed second in the 4x400 relay (4:23.21) and Timerman, Alexa Baryiames, Carter, and Nada was first in the 4x160 (1:30.50).

HAMPTON – Alexis Brown’s game-high 14 points led Seabrook to this win.

Zoey Webber led Hampton with nine points, while teammates Emily LeBlanc and Bailey Mitchell starred defensively.
