Track: Quincy girls sweep double dual, boys drop two

CONCORD, MI. - The Quincy Oriole track and field team took the long trip to Concord High School on Wednesday to finish off their Big 8 conference dual meet schedule as they faced off with the host Yellow Jackets as well as the Jonesville Comets.

Quincy battled to a split on the day, as the Lady Orioles swept their part of the dual while the boys dropped a pair of tough losses.

In the girls’ portion of the competition, it was Quincy taking a pair of wins, defeating Jonesville by the score of 102-33 and Concord by the score of 102.5-34.5. Concord took the win on the other dual, defeating Jonesville 72-64.

Quincy’s winning effort was bolstered by nine individual event victories, including a dominant sweep of the field events.

The throwing duo of Sophia Snellenberger and Raigen Horsfall finished 1-2 in both the shot put and discus to lead the Quincy effort. Snellenberger took first place in both events, winning the shot put with a season best throw of 39 feet, 5 inches while also taking a win in the discus with a throw of 136 feet, 5 inches. Horsfall was not far behind, taking runner-up finishes in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 1 inch and a second place finish in the discus with a throw of 111 feet, 11 inches.

Rounding out the Quincy sweep in the field events was Coelie Smullen with a victory in the high jump with a jump of 4 feet, 8 inches; Brooke McVicker who won the pole vault with a vault of 8 feet, 0 inches, a personal best effort; and Abby Tinervia who won the long jump with a jump of 14 feet, 3.25 inches.

Two runners notched a pair of wins on the night, as junior Anna Richer and freshman Brookelyn Parker won two events each. Richer took first place in the 100-meter dash in a time of 13.85 seconds while also taking first place in the 200 in a time of 28.76 seconds, a personal best time. Parker was dominant in sweeping the hurdles, winning the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.88 seconds and the 300 hurdles in a time of 53.99 seconds.

Also pacing the Quincy victory with a win was the 400-relay team of Richer, Tinervia, McVicker, and Olivia Davenport in a time of 1 minute, 2.00 seconds and the 3200-relay team of Raylee Fulton, Libby Butchart, Kadence Luckadoo, and Abby Loesh in a time of 12 minutes, 39.55 seconds.

Rounding out the Quincy effort with a top three finish in their respective event was Elizabeth Craig, second place in the 400; Cheyenne Marske, third place in the 400 and third place in the long jump ; Sadie Miller, second place in the 800 and second place in the 1600; Libby Butchart, third place in the 1600 and second place in the 3200; Raylee Fulton, third place in the 3200; Lorelai Kugler, second place in the 100 hurdles; Teagan Payne, third place in the 100 hurdles and third place in the 300 hurdles; the 400 relay team of Payne, Lilly Gray, Piper Craig, and Lorelai Kugler, second place; the 800 relay team of Craig, Marske, Richer and Tinervia, second place; the 1600 relay team of Miller, Parker, Marske and Craig, second place; the 1600 relay team of Kugler, Macayla Cleaver, Lillian Gould-Zimmer, and Piper Craig, third place; and Abby Leosh, third place in the pole vault.

In the boys’ competition it was Concord netting the sweep, defeating Quincy 76-61 and Jonesville 70-66. Jonesville also took the win over Quincy, winning by the score of 74-63.

Quincy had three individual event winners on the night, paced by big man Ashtyn Morris who won the discus with a throw of 123 feet, 2.50 inches while also taking second place in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 8 inches.

Senior Rhett Reif also had a big night for the Orioles, winning the 3200-meter run in a time of 11 minutes, 0.45 seconds while also taking second place in the high jump with a new personal best height of 6 feet, 0 inches, bettering his old mark by 5 full inches.

Quincy’s third individual win of the day came in the pole vault where sophomore Corey Turner took first place honors with a vault of 12 feet, 0 inches.

Senior Ethan Hollister also had a very productive day, taking second place in the long jump with a jump of 20 feet, 1.25 inches, third place in the 100 in a time of 11.82 seconds, and fourth place in the 200.

Rounding out the Quincy effort with a top three finish in their respective event was Nathan Richer, third place in the 1600; Clayton Benson, second place in the 110 hurdles; Kaleb Handy, second place in the 300 hurdles and third place in the pole vault; the 400 relay team of Bryce Bellamy, Michael Daniels, Hollister and Turner, second place; the 1600 relay team of Cameron Barry, Micah Groves, Rhett Reif and Benson, third place; the 3200 relay team of Braiden Mosher, Hudson Gray, Nathan Richer and Davin George, third place; Tre’Von Bodley, third place in the shot put; Caleb Kelley, second place in the discus; and Carter McClellan, third place in the discus.

The Quincy Orioles put a cap on their Big 8 dual meet schedule with the effort Wednesday and will finish off their conference season May 24 when they head to Concord for the Big 8 championship meet. Meanwhile the Orioles will look to bring home some hardware from Constantine’s CHS Invite this Friday before heading on to regionals the following Friday.
