Track and field: Small sister schools take home trophies at NJAC Championships

HAMBURG — Joziah Johnson credited the competition with propelling him to three personal bests at the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference small-school track and field championships. Johnson won both hurdles races in school-record times, and anchored the 4x400 to help Parsippany capture the team plaque at the two-day meet.

This is Parsippany's first boys title since 2019.

Parsippany Hills ran away from the girls field to win their first NJAC team championship. It will be the first new addition to the Vikings' banner since 1979, along with the Morris County Relays small-school title from a week ago.

Johnson grew up running with Morristown Beard junior Spencer Anderson at an AAU club, and they came back together as high school opponents. Parsippany Hills junior Julio Tatis is another regular foe.

Wallkill Valley senior Chris Ross doubled in the 100 and 200 (school-record 22.0), helping the hosts place second as a team by just three points. Tatis won the 400 and was second in the 400.

"They definitely push me a lot," said Johnson, who has signed a National Letter of Intent with George Mason.

"The only reason I PRed in the (200), is because I had the other three kids – (Ross, Tatis and Anderson) – in front of me. I feel like I run faster with somebody to chase. Once I catch them and finish in front of them, it feels great."

The Parsippany Hills girls core four – juniors Anya Sadowski and Leann Lombardi, sophomore Kira Chebishev, and senior Amanda Hoffman – were shifted and shuffled and juggled to full effect.

Sophomore Meghan Metz finished second in the 3,200, her first time scoring at a championship meet. Senior Alex Jurow was third in discus. Senior Sophia Camiscioli tied for sixth in pole vault.

Sadowski, Hoffman and Lombardi went 1-2-4 in the 400 hurdles. Sadowski and Lombardi placed in the 100-meter hurdles. The quartet, which wrapped up the meet by winning the 4x400, got psyched up with a silly school cheer.

"After we did the chant, I said, 'We have to win now, or it will be embarrassing.'" Sadowski said. "It's not intimidating, but maybe they'll see us being team-y."

Home cookin'

When Delana Einreinhofer got to Wallkill Valley last fall, she really wanted to break the outdoor school record in the 800 meters. That was the closest to her PR, and felt the most attainable – even though it had stood since 1986.

It took her almost two years. Einreinhofer brought home triple distance gold – and a pair of school records in the 800 (2:18.22) and 1,600 (5:05.31). She now holds the Rangers' outdoor marks in all three distance races.

The Wallkill Valley girls finished second.

"I kicked the first 50, and then settled into my pace," said Einreinhofer, who also won the NJAC 1,600 last spring.

"The girls here are all insanely good. They're all putting down some insane times, so I knew it would be a good race."

Need for speed

  • Madison junior Ella Tucker won the 100 and 200 meters and was third in the 400. Dodgers sophomore Leo London was first in both long-distance races.

  • Hanover Park sophomore Juliana Behringer had the top marks in shot put and javelin, and was second in discus.
