Match report

13:10 , Alex Young

Tottenham and Newcastle played out a 1-1 draw in their controversial post-season friendly in Melbourne before a late penalty shootout saw the Magpies earn the spoils.

Spurs controlled the bulk of the possession during the first half with neither side too keen to rush into much of an off-the-ball press in what was generally a competitive friendly Down Under, which attracted criticism for its timing between the season’s end and the summer’s major tournaments.

12:08 , Marc Mayo

We’ve got a flurry of seagulls hanging about the MCG, luckily none of which have landed on the pitch yet.

Melbourne fans not short of entertainment

11:48 , Marc Mayo

It’s been pretty competitive stuff in Australia.

Tottenham have had the better of it but only that James Maddison goal as a result of their possession, with the England man lucky to avoid being pulled up for handball before he scored.

Brennan Johnson saw a big chance denied by Nick Pope before Brandon Austin’s spilled cross allowed Alexander Isak to level up late on.

Spurs leave space in behind and Jacob Murphy is played in to cross low, which is palmed into the six-yard box by Brandon Austin for Isak to tap home!

Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle | 44 mins

11:39 , Marc Mayo

Great work by Lewis Hall on the left flank before Bruno Guimaraes overhits the through ball to Alexander Isak. The service to the Swede has been poor from Newcastle in this half.

Perhaps a pre-planned change given his recent return from injury? England will hope so!

Jacob Murphy comes on to play right-back.

Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle | 33 mins

11:28 , Marc Mayo

That would almost certainly have been ruled out by VAR..!

But this is a friendly after all and far more important than the handball, from a Spurs point of view, was James Maddison’s delightful dribble before a powerful finish.

Spurs ahead one-zip.

GGGGOOOOOAAALLLL!! Tottenham 1-0 Newcastle | Maddison, 32'

11:27 , Marc Mayo

A break in play as Joelinton looks to have taken a whack to the knee.

Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle | 25 mins

11:20 , Marc Mayo

Dejan Kulusevski controls a forward ball expertly on the edge of the box before James Maddison’s scuffed left-footed effort almost falls for Pape Sarr’s run.

Tottenham upping the pressure now, Kieran Trippier fouling Heung-min Son. A good laugh between the old teammates as they hit the deck.

Spurs play it short and the same players collide in the box, Son having the softest of penalty appeals turned down.

Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle | 23 mins

11:18 , Marc Mayo

Tottenham deal with another Newcastle corner and again Dejan Kulusevski holds it up on the counter.

We’re waiting for someone to take a risk and Pedro Porro is slipped in behind, only for his cross to be scrambled away.

James Maddison then whips a shot wide of Nick Pope’s goal from 18 yards out. Wouldn’t have counted, the flag is up.

And we have a new, un-ripped shirt for Dan Burn.

Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle | 20 mins

11:14 , Marc Mayo

Brandon Austin palms away a corner from under his crossbar and Tottenham look to break.

Dejan Kulusevski with some smart hold-up play but the move eventually collapses. The Swede has the capability to be a bit of a target man in the central striker’s role. You could argue that’s exactly what Spurs need.

Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle | 17 mins

11:12 , Marc Mayo

Spurs with the bulk of the possession so far as Newcastle look to play on the break, and almost release Miguel Almiron into space after repelling a cross.

Just the one shot apiece and neither were on target.

Micky van de Ven earns a big round of applause from the Tottenham half of the crown with a trademark rush back to cover a runner and win the ball.

Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle | 12 mins

11:06 , Marc Mayo

Dan Burn has a ripped shirt after a tangle with Dejan Kulusevski, just in case anyone was doubting the ferocity of this match!

A pretty decent start in terms of tempo, both teams effectively taking turns to have a go. Not a huge amount of off-the-ball press.

Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle | 9 mins

11:02 , Marc Mayo

Dejan Kulusevski playing as the central striker with Heung-min Son wide left.

Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle | 6 mins

11:00 , Marc Mayo

Lovely spin by Elliot Anderson wins a foul off Micky van de Ven up the pitch.

Good chance for Newcastle to load the box, but there’s a foul in the box from Kieran Trippier’s cross.

Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle | 4 mins

10:57 , Marc Mayo

Spurs with a big penalty appeal!

Heung-min Son snatches possession in the Newcastle final third from a sloppy pass, he shoots from range and the block is contested.

The referee turns Tottenham down, replays show it hit Emil Krafth’s leg and maybe his lowered hand.

Alexander Isak shoots over down the other end.

Tottenham 0-0 Newcastle | 2 mins

10:55 , Marc Mayo

Emerson Royal back to left-back as expected for Spurs in their 4-3-3, Newcastle set up likewise with Harvey Barnes on the left and Miguel Almiron the right wing.

Tottenham vs Newcastle | Kick-off!

10:54 , Marc Mayo

Think the pitchside steam jet caught Heung-min Son out a bit as he walked onto the pitch, ducking his head as it went off right next to him.

The two teams line up, Spurs in all white and Newcastle in their home strip too.

Good number of fans in, a few empty areas of this goliath of an arena but an absolute total guess would suggest in the region of 40,000 in attendance. The commentator says 80,000 but that feels quite optimistic.

A little bit behind the scheduled kick-off time, which isn’t a big surprise for these friendly games, we are underway in Melbourne!

Here come the players!

10:45 , Marc Mayo

The pyrotechnics, fireworks and light show have been entertaining those inside the MCG and a trumpeter on the pitch plays out ‘When the Spurs go marching in’ to rally the fans.

The Newcastle supporters are waving black and white flags, too.

A big reception for Ange Postecoglou as he emerges first.

Kieran Trippier and Heung-min Son then lead the teams out.

'Mad' friendly generates controversy

10:35 , Marc Mayo

The decision of Tottenham and Newcastle to jet to the other side of the planet for a friendly days after the season ends has not been universally welcomed.

With Euro 2024 and the Copa America coming up, and managers regularly complaining of a hectic schedule, there has not been a shortage of pundits lamenting this game.

"Can you imagine if you're a player who is playing in either the Copa America or Euro 2024 having to do that? Madness. Crazy," Alan Shearer told Match Of The Day.

"I wouldn't be happy at all. It's crazy for Newcastle to go and play Spurs there on Wednesday night and then another game."

Let’s see how the circumstances affect the sort of entertainment we get out on the pitch...

Ange Postecoglou explains Cristian Romero absence

10:12 , Marc Mayo

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has explained why Cristian Romero and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg have skipped the post-season friendly against Newcastle in Melbourne.

The defender and midfielder were the only two seemingly fit senior players who did not join the travelling squad.

"Cuti [Romero] is more for personal reasons," Postecoglou told reporters. "He's got to fly back to Argentina.

"Pierre had an injury going into the last game, he was kind of touch and go and after the game, pulled up sore.

"Again, because we were getting straight on a flight, it didn't make any sense when the flight is that long to bring guys like that along.

"Everyone else got through unscathed [against Sheffield United], so we'll have a full compliment from the squad we took away and some young players as well who will get some game time."

Newcastle also go strong

10:04 , Marc Mayo

Kieran Trippier makes his return to the Newcastle XI as he looks to build fitness for Euro 2024.

Elliot Anderson and Miguel Almiron also elevated from the bench.

Brandon Austin gets the nod in goal

09:58 , Marc Mayo

A strong starting line-up named by Ange Postecoglou aside from Brandon Austin coming in in goal.

The 25-year-old has been an occasional substitute this season and is out of contract in the summer too, so perhaps a chance to prove his worth - at Spurs or elsewhere.

Otherwise the likes of Heung-min Son, Micky van de Ven and James Maddison make it a relatively first-choice XI.

Ashley Phillips, Jamie Donley and Alfie Devine are among the youngsters who will try to impress off the bench.

Motivation is not going to be particularly high in either camp, particularly for those expecting to be involved in Euro 2024 or the Copa America later this summer.

Hello and welcome to Standard Sport’s coverage of Tottenham vs Newcastle!

It’s a post-season friendly in Melbourne on the agenda today with kick-off coming at 10.45am BST at the MCG.

This has been a bit of a controversial match to organise with the Euros and Copa America not far off so both sets of players will be very keen not to ruin their summer tournament plans (or holidays) with an injury.

But hopefully we’ll still get a good game with Ange Postecoglou enjoying a homecoming in Australia.
