Top Somerset County basketball, rifle, swimming, wrestling performers for Jan. 2-5

LHAC individual championships

Somerset junior Rowan Holmes won the 215-pound title at the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference individual championships held Friday and Saturday in Tyrone.

Holmes had four pins, including one in his title victory.

Somerset's Zane Hagans finished second at 285 pounds. Michael Bridge (114) and Logan Baker (160) each finished third while Deshonn Valentine took fourth at 127. Sam Sheeler finished fifth at 121 and Drew Miller grabbed sixth at 133.

Friday

Boys basketball

Salisbury-Elk Lick 43, Meyersdale 25: Lance Jones dropped in 19 points to propel the Elks past the Red Raiders.

North Star 62, Claysburg-Kimmel 37: Brady Weimer recorded 18 points for the Cougars in a triumph over the Bulldogs.

Andy Retassie produced 13 points, nine assists and six rebounds, while Ethan Smith added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists for North Star.

Philipsburg-Osceola 48, Somerset 40: Dominic Heiple and Caleb Platt each netted 11 points for the Golden Eagles in a setback.

Girls basketball

Conemaugh Township 46, Cambria Heights 42: Ava Byer erupted for 24 points and 11 rebounds in Conemaugh Township's narrow victory.

Jenna Brenneman added seven points and eight rebounds for Conemaugh Township.

Northern Garrett 53, Rockwood 31: Tessa Nicholson scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Rockets in a non-conference setback.

Faith Foy pulled down 10 rebounds for Rockwood.

Somerset 54, Philipsburg-Osceola 41: Eve Housley poured in 32 points to guide the Golden Eagles to an LHAC victory.

Ava Baumgardner contributed 16 points for Somerset.

Turkeyfoot Valley 54, Johnstown Christian 47: Maleigha Younkin recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Rams over the Blue Jays.

Kiley Mitchell and Eirean Walker each chipped in 10 points for Turkeyfoot.

Unity Miller scored a game-high 27 points for Johnstown Christian.

Rifle

Somerset 1,347 North Star 1,321: Madison Allen (278), Sam Acey (274) and Kiersten Allen (274) paced the Golden Eagles in a triumph over the Cougars.

Cody Snoeberger (279), Gracie Eshleman (269) and Colton Snyder (248) each shot a personal best for North Star.

Swimming

Somerset splits: The Somerset girls defeated Richland 110-58 but fell to Clearfield 100-68.

Hope Miller won the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Bethann Walker won the 200 individual medley. Isabella Basala won the 100 breaststroke.

The Somerset boys bested Richland 94-62 but suffered a 120-50 setback to Clearfield.

PFN All-State

The Pennsylvania Football News Coaches Select All-State teams were released in Class 1A-3A on Thursday.

Windber senior kicker Bryson Costa was a first-team selection in 1A. Windber junior offensive tackle Ryan Grohal was a second-team selection.

In Class 2A, Berlin Brothersvalley senior safety Pace Prosser was a first-team honoree.

Boys basketball

Blacklick Valley 63, Salisbury-Elk Lick 51: Lance Jones scored 25 points and Walker Bunnell contributed 18 for the Elks in a setback to the Vikings.

Turkeyfoot Valley 77, Shanksville-Stonycreek 62: Zack Ryan produced 16 points, 11 rebounds and 11 blocked shots for the Rams in a triumph over the Vikings.

Bryce Nicholson tallied 22 points and 13 assists, while Colt Rugg added 14 points for Turkeyfoot.

Christian Musser scored 21 points and Braxton Faidley chipped in 16 for Shanksville.

Girls basketball

Berlin Brothersvalley 43, Claysburg-Kimmel 28: Taylor Hillegass netted 11 points to lead the Mountaineers past the Bulldogs.

Regan Lauer and Mercy Sechler combined for 16 points for Berlin.

Meyersdale 40, Turkeyfoot Valley 22: Izabella Donaldson recorded 13 points and seven rebounds to lift the Red Raiders over the Rams.

Laurel Daniels added nine points for Meyersdale.

Maleigha Younkin had six points for Turkeyfoot.

Windber 56, Blacklick Valley 50: Mariah Andrews delivered 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Ramblers in a narrow victory over the Vikings.

Maggie Manippo scored 12 points and Rylee Baer added 10 for Windber.

Wrestling

Northern Bedford 48, North Star 21: Bryson Gallentine and Eli Mullen picked up falls, while Kasey Yoder won by a 5-4 decision for the Cougars in a setback to the Black Panthers.

Bedford 68, Somerset 46: Caleb Platt recorded 19 points and Dominic Heiple contributed 13 for the Golden Eagles in an LHAC loss to the Bisons.

Girls basketball

Bedford 61, Somerset 34: Eve Housley tallied 11 points and Reagan Holmes pulled down 17 rebounds for the Golden Eagles in a setback to the Bisons.

United 60, Conemaugh Township 32: Ava Byer and Katrina McCann each netted 10 points for Conemaugh Township in a Heritage Conference setback.

Forbes Road 59, Shade 41: Hayden Oaks provided 14 points and Kennedy Landis added 11 for the Panthers in a non-conference setback.

Rifle

Conemaugh Township 1,292, North Star 1,281: Noah Lehman fired a 274 to lead Conemaugh Township past North Star.

Lydia Boring and Brooke Szala each shot a 256 for Conemaugh Township.

Cody Snoeberger (268), Hayden Kobuck (266), and Gracie Eshleman (262) paced North Star.

Northern Cambria 1,190, Shanksville-Stonycreek 1,112: Abagail Lasure shot a 253 for the Vikings in a setback to the Colts.

Bryce Nicholson tallied 25 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, while Zack Ryan chipped in 18 points and 10 rebounds for Turkeyfoot.
