Top performers of Week 4 for Gardner-area high school sports

This past week, Gardner-area athletes continued to put on a show for Week 4 of the fall season. Readers voted Monty Tech golf's Ryan Hebert the top performer of Week 3 for his co-medalist honors in a match against Valley Tech, receiving 49.73% of the vote. Hebert's score of 39 helped Monty Tech to defeat Valley Tech 156-166. Mia Manca of Narragansett field hockey came in second (34.43%) for her hat trick against Gardner, where the Warriors won 7-1.

Field Hockey

Haylie Mahoney scored three goals in Monty Tech’s 6-0 win over Worcester Tech on Wednesday, September 27. The Bulldogs also celebrated Senior Day prior to the game, making for an exciting day for the team. Other goals came from Olivia McKenzie, Abbigale McKenzie and Abbie Law, who is typically Monty Tech’s goalkeeper but got some minutes in the field toward the end of the game.

Boys Soccer

Oakmont defeated Quabbin on Tuesday, September 26, in a 5-1 victory. Gael Vera notched four goals in the win. Liam Mullane had three assists and Reyad Magdoul added a goal and an assist to help the Spartans past the Panthers.

Michael Tobin scored both goals in Quabbin’s 2-1 win over Littleton on Thursday, September 28. Assists came from Jacoby Dilling and Jenkins Miller.

Girls Soccer

Gardner’s Emma McNamara headed the ball into the goal off a free kick from Alli Fitzsimmons to score the game winning goal over Fitchburg, 1-0, on Tuesday, September 26.

Hannah Duval scored two goals in Oakmont’s win over Quabbin on Tuesday Sept. 26. The Spartans won 3-0, Molly Horgan contributing the other goal.

Girls Volleyball

Bailey Tetrault had a big week for Monty Tech volleyball. Tetrault helped to lead the Bulldogs to victories over Leominster on Tuesday, September 26 and Notre Dame on Wednesday, September 27. Tetrault totaled 7 kills, 2 aces, 23 assists and 2 digs in these two games.

Boys Golf

Michael Cannon medaled back to back days for Monty Tech, leading the Bulldogs past their opponents. On Wednesday, September 27, Cannon shot 36 to help defeat Assabet 156-169. Thursday, he shot a 2-under 33, leading Monty Tech past Bay Path 150-168.

Oakmont’s Max Doane scored a 39 in the Spartans’ match against Shepherd Hill on Thursday, September 28. Oakmont won in match-play 28.5-25.5.

Boys Cross-Country

Gardner cross country beat Clinton 15-48 on Thursday, September 28. The Wildcats swept the top five, with Telmo Iturbe coming in first with a time of 19:18. Bradley Bettez (19:58), Sokari Jenkins (20:03), Jaden Ocero (20:15) and Mike Gemelli (20:40) all followed close behind.

Girls Cross-Country

Gardner also competed well on the girls' side, defeating Clinton 16-45 on Thursday. Krista Bettez took first place with a time of 22:17. Fellow teammates followed behind to round out the top four: Megan Bettez (23:11), Avah Zelesky (24:11) and Libby Ofowski (24:56).
