Top performers from April 9-11 around Petoskey area

There’s plenty of action from the last few days around the area for spring sports.

Here are the top high school sports performances from Tuesday to Thursday around Emmet and Charlevoix counties.

There won’t be a set number of players chosen in each sport in a given week, just including performances which stood out and deserve recognition.

Check for another installment of top performers early next week.

BASEBALL

Drew Olson, Petoskey: Olson continued to swing a nice bat when Petoskey met Cheboygan this week and earned wins of 11-0 and 8-2. Olson went 2 for 3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs in the opener, then went 2 for 2 with three runs scored in the nightcap.

Kam Horn, Petoskey: Horn put together a solid opening game against Cheboygan Wednesday, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Bass Pierce, Mackinaw City: In a split with Central Lake this week, Pierce pitched three innings, allowing just one walk and striking out five in an 11-1 defeat, then earned a save in a 3-2 win with three strikeouts and just one walk allowed in one inning. He also scored the lone run in game one and went 1 for 1 in game two.

Peyton Harmon, Petoskey: Harmon led in game one on the mound, earning the win behind four innings with just one hit and no walks allowed. He also struck out three. In game two, he doubled and scored a run, helping Petoskey to a 4-2 start to the year.

TRACK AND FIELD

Sam Mitas, Petoskey: In the first outdoor meet hosted by PHS, Mitas earned a win in the 100 meter dash (11.10) was part of the 4x100 meter relay win (44.43) and set a new school record in the 200 meter dash (22.63) with a win.

Russell Vandermus, St. Michael: Vandermus topped the 800 meter run in Petoskey in 2:09.55, was second in the 1600 meter run in 4:47.63 and was part of a runner-up 4x400 relay team in 3:47.44.

Sarah Bailey, Petoskey: Bailey is already showing her versatility on the track for PHS, doing so with a win in the 100 hurdles (16.86) and victory in the pole vault (9-feet) Wednesday.

Jane Manthei, St. Michael: There’s been no slowing into the season for Manthei, as she earned a pair of wins in both the 800 meter run (2:30.78) and 1600 meter run (5:19.97) in Petoskey Wednesday. The St. Michael 4x400 relay team, led by Manthei, also won in 4:32.85.

Brady Odenbach, Petoskey: Odenbach earned a victory within the 400 meter run against Alpena and Sault Wednesday in 54.67, then was part of a victory in the 4x800 relay in 8:37.00.

Brody Shaw, Petoskey: Shaw was at the top of the shot put list Wednesday in Petoskey with a throw of 40-feet, 5-inches. He was also runner-up in the discus in 128-feel, 1-inch.

Korbin Sulitis, Petoskey: Sulitis opened the season in Petoskey with a strong throw of 152-feet, 4-inches in the discus, then was also third in the shot put in 36-feet, 10-inches.

Madeline Loe, Petoskey: Loe got the season started right with a victory in the 100 (12.90), win in the 200 (27.46) and helped the 4x100 relay team earn a win (51.26).

Leah Sulitis, Petoskey: Like her brother, Leah Sulitis turned in a strong showing in the throws this week during Petoskey’s hosted meet. She placed second in the discus in 92-feet, 6-inches, then fifth in the shot put in 30-feet, 2-inches.

Braylin Adair, Petoskey: Adair leaped to a first place overall finish in the high jump Wednesday against Alpena and Sault Ste. Marie, clearing 5-feet event. It was six inches better than the next competitor.

SOFTBALL

Bryleigh Rummer, Harbor Springs: Rummer is off to a solid start to 2024, just like the Rams’ 4-0 start. For the week – which incldues wins over Harbor Light and Alanson, Rummer went 6 for 8 with a double, triple, eight RBIs and six runs scored.

Ayla Kemp, Charlevoix: Kemp is having a strong season at the top of the Rayder lineup with a 3 for 3 opener against TC West Tuesday, adding three runs scored, an RBI and a pair of doubles. Charlevoix dropped both games.

Marlie Richardson, Harbor Springs: In a 21-5 win over Alanson this week, Richardson went 2 for 2 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored. She also added an RBI single in game two, a 19-3 win.

Emma Meadows, Charlevoix: Meadows found success against TC West in both games, going 5 for 5 on the night, with a combined three RBIs, a double and a run scored.

Madi Gorney, Harbor Springs: Gorney was a runs making machine this week in a 4-0 start for Harbor Springs, going 3 for 4 with eight runs scored.

SOCCER

Sadie Corey, Petoskey: This week came with a pair of shutout wins in net for Corey as the Northmen keeper against Big Rapids and Harbor Springs. It also came with a victory in the shot put for the PHS track team with a throw of 35-feet, 4-inches when PHS hosted Alpena and Sault Ste. Marie.

Annika Gandhi, Petoskey: It was a three-goal week for Gandhi after scoring against Big Rapids in a 3-0 victory, then adding two more goals against Harbor Springs in a 4-0 win Thursday.
