Here are the top Corpus Christi-area athletes to watch at this week's district track meets

The long push to reach Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin for UIL State Track next month begins this week with district track meets dotted across the Coastal Bend.

Several standouts have long shined on the biggest of stages, names such as Refugio's Ernest Campbell, who will be going for his fourth state championship in Class 2A boys 100-meter dash as he and his teammates chase a state title.

Others are trying to break through with state success — and in some cases trying to get to Austin for the first time.

The UIL championship season starts with district meets, where the top four finishers advance to area, a meet that pairs two neighboring districts.

District 29-5A is paired with District 30-5A, for example.

At the area meet, again the top four finishers advance to the Region IV meet. Once athletes reach regionals, only the top two finishers are guaranteed a spot at state in Austin, with the best third-place finisher across the state earning a wild card berth.

Here are a few athletes to watch as meets get under way around Corpus Christi:
