Tom Brady on his thumb injury: ‘I’ve certainly had worse’

TAMPA — Fist bumps replaced handshakes after Sunday’s win over the Dolphins as Tom Brady immediately began to protect the sore thumb on his right throwing hand.

Brady was injured in the second quarter of the Bucs’ 45-17 win over the Dolphins but managed to pass for 411 yards and five touchdowns.

The Bucs play the Eagles in Philadelphia Thursday night.

“For most guys, hand injuries won’t be much of a problem unless it’s really broken or something like that, but for quarterbacks, it’s pretty important,” Brady said during his Let’s Go! podcast Monday. “Even after the game (Sunday), it was pretty sore and I had all these guys who were former teammates who wanted to shake my hand like normal and I said, ‘No man, my hand is messed up! Take it easy!’ So I just gave them a little fist bump, a light one, and wrapped it up. ...

“Hopefully it will feel great for Thursday night.”

Earlier Monday, the Bucs held a pad-less walk-through indoors, where Brady was listed as a limited participant on the team’s official injury report.

“He went through the full practice,” coach Bruce Arians said. “Had we had a full-speed practice, we probably would’ve limited his throwing, but he looks like he’ll be fine by Thursday.”

Brady says he kept compression on his thumb Sunday night, and the injury wasn’t nearly as bad as some he has had to his throwing hand during 21 NFL seasons.

“Obviously, a little bit sore after. Anytime you hit it on someone or a helmet or whatever, your hand can become pretty vulnerable,” he said. “I broke my ring finger on my right hand. I tore ligaments in my middle finger. I tore ligaments in my pointer finger. Ripped my thumb almost apart one time. But this is something hopefully I can work through pretty quickly. It’s a little bit sore but nothing I’m not used to. I’ve certainly had worse.”
