Today in Golden State History: Warriors win 2017 NBA championship with game 5 victory vs. Cavs, 129-120

With the Warriors’ 2020-21 campaign coming to an end after a pair of losses in the Western Conference play-in tournament, Warriors Wire is digging through some of the top team and individual moments along with memorable anniversaries in Golden State’s history.

After tearing through the Western Conference postseason with three consecutive sweeps, the 2016-17 edition of the Warriors had a chance at revenge against LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. In the 2016 NBA Finals, the Cavaliers sealed the title over the Warriors in a classic seven-game battle.

The Warriors opened the series with three consecutive wins, including a victory in Cleveland in game three. However, the Cavs notched a win over the Warriors in game four to shift the series back to the Bay Area.

With a frenzied crowd at Oakland’s Oracle Arena, the Warriors put on a show led by Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. Durant tallied a team-high 39 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the floor with six boards, five assists and a steal in 40 minutes.

Curry followed right behind his teammate with 34 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor with 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals in 41 minutes. Draymond Green notched a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds in game five to go along with five assists and two steals in 44 minutes.

Although LeBron James dropped 41 points on 19-of-30 shooting from the field with 13 boards and eight assists, it wasn’t enough to slow down the Warriors on their way to another title.

Golden State became the 2017 NBA champions with a game five win over the Cavaliers, 129-120.
