Times Elite 11: Here’s why LSU commitment Tylen Singleton doubles up on workouts

When you compete at the level of Many’s Tylen Singleton, one workout per day just doesn’t cut it.

That’s why the strapping 6-foot-2, 209-pound cornerback/linebacker/receiver, who watches his weight religiously, goes once daily with his Tiger teammates, then usually makes the 1 ½ hour drive to Shreveport to grind at D1 Training.

While in Shreveport, Singleton also makes a special stop that has nothing to do with football. His grandfather, George Cain, is undergoing cancer treatments at LSU Health Shreveport. The two have been inseparable at times. Singleton helps his grandfather with the cattle on his farm and sometimes goes to auctions. They’ve often fished together in a Sabine Parish creek.

“We’re real close. We’ve done a lot of fun things together,” Singleton said. “Soon as I get out of workouts, I’ve been going to see him.”

A recent LSU commitment who has a four-star rating on 247Sports, Singleton comes in at No. 2 on the Shreveport Times Elite 11 list of top senior college football prospects in Northwest Louisiana. He joins teammate Swazy Carhill, former teammate Joe Cryer and Byrd’s Abram Murray on the list.

Singleton is a Top 5 Louisiana recruit and a Top 15 cornerback nationally. Last season, he posted 78 tackles with two sacks along with three interceptions in leading Many to the 2022 to the LHSAA Non-Select Division III state title. It was Singleton’s second title in three years at Many.

Singleton is already thinking about name, image and likeness money. After graduating in December and early enrolling at LSU, he plans to major in business and hopes to start his own clothing brand.

“I have a sketch book and I’ve been sketching some of my shirts,” he said. “They don’t look too good, but I like drawing. I’ve been drawing hoodies, shorts and sweatshirts.”

When he isn’t sketching or working out, Singleton thinks back over some of his favorite games as a Tiger. When you finish three consecutive seasons in the New Orleans Superdome, there are a lot of them. But one was last year when No. 1 national recruit Arch Manning and Newman rolled into Many for a memorable contest won by Many in front of a standing room only crowd.

“That game was legend. There were tons of people,” he said. “When we played St. James with Khai Prean, who went to LSU — Union Parish with Trey Holly and both times we played Amite because they’re always loaded with athletes. That was an electric game.”

Many will have a new-look offense this fall under new coach Dillon Barrett. There’ll be less run and more spread with two talented quarterbacks throwing to guys such as Singleton, who will be on the offensive side for the first time.

“I feel like we’ll do great, but our receivers have to get out of the mindset of just blocking,” Singleton said. "Our quarterbacks are really talented. They’re fast and both are baseball players, so you know they have an arm on them.”
