Tiger Woods' tampon faux pas turned into campaign to donate period products based on his Masters performance

Editor's note: Here are the latest live updates from Friday's Round 2, including Tiger Woods' tee time and more.

The 87th Masters Tournament has teed off, and as per usual, 15-time major winner Tiger Woods is the talk of Augusta National as he seeks his sixth Masters win. But nearly two months ago, Woods was being talked about for another reason entirely -- a failed tampon joke.

Woods went viral in February at the Genesis Invitational when he handed Justin Thomas a tampon after he outdrove him, implying that Thomas played like a girl. He was criticized for what many saw was a display of sexism. The 47-year-old father of a teenage daughter apologized for his action, saying the gesture was meant to be "friends having fun."

Now, sports equality organization The Gist is partnering with Sunny, a period cup applicator brand, to donate tampons based on Woods' performance at the 2023 Masters. For each stroke that Woods hits at Augusta, The Gist will donate a pack of tampons to Period Promise in British Columbia, an initiative of United Way to give period products to underprivileged communities.

"Hey @tigerwoods, you already gave away one tampon. Now you get to give away more," The Gist said Wednesday in the caption for their Instagram post announcing the campaign. "... Sexism is never par for the course."

OPINION: Really, Tiger? You're a 47-year-old 'girl dad' but thought tampon stunt would be funny?

Woods, who is making his 25th Masters appearance, admitted earlier this week, “I don't know how many more I have in me,” and that he planned to just “enjoy my time here and the memories.”

At the time of publication Thursday afternoon, Woods had 65 strokes with a score of 1-over par. This means 65 boxes of tampons have been donated to people in need.

Fans can track Woods' performance and the number of donations as well as make a donation to Period Promise at TheGist.com.
