Thursday high school football roundup: Ventura, Newbury Park roll to league victories

Logan Scarlett threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers and the defense pitched its second shutout of the season as the Ventura High football team improved to 4-1 with a 42-0 win at Dos Pueblos in a CHannel League game on Thursday night.

Josh Woodworth, Makana Arndt, Mylan Walker and Liam Robinson caught TDs passes and Sawyer Cline and Gage Kushner had TD runs as six different Cougars found the end zone.

“That was a great team effort for us,” Ventura coach Tim Garcia said. “Our guys responded.”

Sophomore linebacker Dylan Klinzing had an interception to lead a Ventura defense which held firm for a pair of goal line stands.

Ventura improved to 3-0 in league play. It moved into sole possession of first place, pending 4-0 Pacifica’s home game against San Marcos on Friday.

With a visit from Santa Barbara on Sept. 22 and a trip to Pacifica on Sept. 29, the Cougars are entering a pivotal stretch of their schedule.

“We are getting into a stretch here where we want to be playing our best ball,” Garcia said. “We have goals that we want to accomplish. It comes down to us taking care of things that we need to take care of.”

Newbury Park 53, Royal 7

Brady Smigiel completed 14 of 20 passes for 268 yards and six touchdowns in just a half of work as Newbury Park responded to its first loss of the season with a resounding win in its Canyon League opener on the road.

“Any time you lose, the most important thing is you learn from it and you respond from it,” Newbury Park coach Joe Smigiel said.

The Panthers (3-1) were coming of a bye week after a 63-52 loss at Santa Maria-St. Joseph on Sept. 1.

“We were a little bit rusty,” Smigiel said. “We had a couple people forget to be on special teams. We had a fumble and other stuff that we could have done better. … But we played way better on defense.”

Jaden Mack had two TD receptions, Shane Rosenthal caught three passes for 95 yards and a TD and Landon Bell caught three passes for 82 yards and a TD for Newbury Park.

Cole Mills and Brady Smigiel also caught TD passes and Noah McArthur had a TD run as the Panthers built a 48-7 halftime lead.

Junior Zach Nagy reeled in an 84-yard scoring strike from junior Crichton Ae to get Royal (0-5, 0-1) on the board in the second quarter. The Highlanders visit Camarillo next weekend.

“Royal has a good front,” Smigiel said. “They have some good players there. They did some good twisting and blitzing and put (Brady Smigiel) on the run a couple times.”

Newbury Park now prepares for rival Thousand Oaks in what promises to not only be a pivotal game in the Canyon League, but one of Ventura County’s most anticipated matchups of the season.

“It’s not so much who our opponent is, it’s about ourselves,” Smigiel said. “We have to get better every week. We have players at new positions. We have to take little steps every day.”

Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks 27, Westlake 6

Dominic Hunt threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Braylon Butout in the second quarter for the Warriors’ only score of their nonleague home loss.

Jaylen Moore and Dalton Walker had interceptions for Westlake (1-4), which has a bye week before starting Marmonte League play at Simi Valley on Sept. 29.

Former Simi Valley quarterback Steele Pizzella completed 16 of 30 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions and also rushed for 34 yards for the Knights.

Former Thousand Oaks High head coach Evan Yabu is now 4-1 in his first season as the Notre Dame coach.

Santa Barbara 21, Oxnard 7

Jose Hernandez had a 3-yard TD run in the fourth quarter as the Yellowjackets fell on the road at Peabody Stadium.

Oxnard (1-3, 1-2 Channel League) hosts Calabasas in a nonleague game next weekend.
