Three Rivers takes second to open volleyball season at Gull Lake

RICHLAND — The Three Rivers volleyball team opened the season with a solid start this past weekend. Megan Jergens took over the program earlier this year and helped guide the Lady Wildcats to a second-place finish at the Gull Lake Invitational.

Three Rivers made it to the championship match, but fell to Hamilton in three sets at 25-21, 17-25 and 11-15. They qualified for the gold bracket by splitting with Hamilton in pool play at 25-17, 20-25 to open the day. The Cats then dropped a 21-25, 14-25 decision to Niles before beating Grand Rapids Union 25-5, 25-12 to reach the knockout stage.

There, Three Rivers beat Battle Creek Lakeview 25-18, 25-20 and Niles 25-19, 25-21.

Miley Southland handed out 104 assists on the day, adding 14 digs with 11 kills while Jenna Southland hammered home 48 kills with 24 digs, six blocks and three aces. Allie McGlothlen totaled 16 kills on the day with 17 digs and four blocks, Arabella Mangold added 20 kills with 29 digs, five blocks and five aces.

Lanie Glass recorded nine kills, Maddie O’Hara finished with six while Aliza Munro added 42 digs. Natalie Bachinksi led the team with eight aces on the day.

Burr Oak wins Tekonsha Tournament 

The Burr Oak volleyball team opened their season with a victory at the Tekonsha Tournament held on Saturday. The Lady Bobcats knocked off Tekonsha 25-16, 27-26 in the final match (which was capped at 27 points). Prior to that, Burr Oak beat Will Carleton Academy 25-7, 25-23 in the knockout stage.

Pool play saw Burr Oak clean up with wins over Litchfield 25-10, 25-18; Tekonsha 25-10, 25-7 and Will Carleton 25-15, 25-12.

Braylyn Hernandez handed out 74 assists on the day, adding 23 digs with 14 kills and 11 aces. Sarah Hirschy led with 41 kills, adding 27 digs, eight aces and eight assists and Brooklynn Root totaled 20 kills with nine aces and four digs.

Cristal Hernandez logged 30 digs with 15 kills, Makaila Whittington added 17 kills. Amy Ledyard finished with 21 digs, three aces and two kills while Addison Eldridge totaled 11 aces and 12 digs. Saryia Cornejo finished with five kills as well.

Bronson finishes 2-2 on Saturday 

The Bronson volleyball team traveled north for its annual Leland opening weekend. There, the Lady Vikings played to a 2-2 record.

“I am very proud of the kids and the resiliency they showed through some tough and challenging obstacles that we needed to play through,” Bronson coach Jean LaClair said.

Bronson’s two wins on the day came over Traverse City Christian 25-22, 25-10 and McBain 25-19, 25-19. The two losses came to Portage Northern 13-25, 19-25 and Leland 25-18, 20-25 and 5-15.

Aubree Calloway logged 23 kills with eight aces, five digs and seven blocks to lead Bronson. Ciara Blankenship totaled 25 digs on the day.

Aleah Brackett handed out 38 assists, adding 13 kills with six aces and 16 digs while Kennedy Clemens totaled six aces, 13 digs and two blocks. Ryleigh Fee totaled two kills while Itzel Sanchez added five digs and four aces.

Payton Springstead finished with 20 kills, 10 digs, six aces and two blocks and Mya Webb handed out five assists.

Bronson will host a quad coming up on Saturday at 10 a.m.
