Things to know as 2024 CIAA basketball tournament tips off in Baltimore this week
The CIAA basketball tournament is back in Baltimore, Maryland, this year with 24 games set to determine the men's and women's 2024 champions.
Fayetteville State men's and women's teams swept the Southern Division regular-season titles and both will carry a No. 1 seed and first-round bye into the league tournament.
The tournament starts Monday, Feb. 26, at CFG Bank Arena and concludes Saturday with championship games set for 1 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men). Both championship games will be televised on ESPNU.
First-round byes put both Broncos squads in Wednesday's quarterfinals, with the FSU women facing the Bluefield State-Livingstone winner at 4:30 p.m., and the FSU men awaiting the Bowie State-Livingstone winner at 6:40 p.m.
Elizabeth City State, coached by former NC State All-ACC and WNBA guard Tynesha Lewis, is the reigning women's CIAA tournament champion after claiming the first title in program history last season. It takes the No. 1 seed from the Northern Division into the postseason.
The Fayetteville State men (16-12, 11-7) claimed their second straight Southern Division title, sharing an 8-4 division record with Claflin but earning the top seed by virtue of a tiebreaker based on the winning margins in head-to-head matchups. That puts the Broncos on the same side of the bracket as reigning champion Winston-Salem State, which has won two of the last three CIAA titles — with FSU claiming the other.
