Texas Tech to induct Patrick Mahomes into its Ring of Honor and Hall of Fame

Patrick Mahomes II went from being a two-time FBS total offense leader at Texas Tech to being one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the NFL, winning the league's most valuable player honor and a Super Bowl MVP during a whirlwind first five years with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mahomes' alma mater will give him more recognition this fall, making him the eighth member of the Texas Tech Football Ring of Honor as well as inducting him into the Tech Athletics Hall of Fame. The ceremonies are planned for the last weekend in October, when Tech hosts Baylor and when Mahomes' Chiefs have an open date on the schedule.

Tech announced it Saturday.

A Tech contingent including President Lawrence Schovanec, athletics director Kirby Hocutt and Regent Dusty Womble were scheduled to surprise Mahomes with a presentation on the videoboard at Arrowhead Stadium shortly after the Chiefs' exhibition game Saturday against Washington. Kliff Kingsbury, Mahomes' coach at Tech, was one of the speakers in the video Tech put together for the announcement.

"When you look at the face of the NFL, that is Patrick Mahomes," Hocutt said. "Patrick’s accomplishments at Texas Tech are well documented with his success as one of the top quarterbacks in college football history. Patrick is an NFL MVP and a Super Bowl champion, but he’s, most importantly, a Red Raider who remains an avid supporter of our great university. We are excited to welcome home Patrick and his family later this fall to see his name formally honored inside Jones AT&T Stadium."

Mahomes' name and No. 5 — his jersey number with the Red Raiders — will be revealed on the west stadium building at Jones AT&T Stadium when Tech hosts Baylor on Oct. 29. Tech started its football Ring of Honor in 2012 with a charter class of Donny Anderson, E.J. Holub and Dave Parks. Those subsequently chosen were Gabriel Rivera in 2014, Zach Thomas in 2016, Michael Crabtree in 2020 and Elmer Tarbox in 2021.

Tech plans to induct this year's Hall of Fame class at an Oct. 28 luncheon and have a ceremony for Mahomes later that evening.

Mahomes led the FBS in total offense yards per game as a Red Raiders sophomore in 2015 and junior in 2016. He left a year of college eligibility on the table when he declared for the NFL draft and was selected 10th overall in April 2017.

"Patrick Mahomes is a once in a generation type talent at quarterback and a deserving inductee into the Ring of Honor,” Tech coach Joey McGuire said. "From afar, you could see how talented he was as a star at Whitehouse High School and then his success leading one of the nation’s leading offenses as a Red Raider. We are so proud he is a Red Raider and can’t wait to welcome him back home this fall."

Mahomes, who turns 27 on Sept. 17, is beginning his sixth NFL season, all with the Chiefs. He's been selected for the Pro Bowl four times — every year since he became the Chiefs' full-time starter in 2018. That season, he made first-team All-Pro and became the first Chiefs' player to be named the NFL MVP.

The Chiefs won the Super Bowl the following season with Mahomes, at 24, became the youngest quarterback and third-youngest player to claim the Super Bowl MVP honor. In July 2020, he signed a 10-year contract extension that , including bonuses, can be worth up to $503 million. At the time, it was the largest contract in American pro sports history.

The Chiefs lost in the Super Bowl after the 2020 season and lost in the AFC championship game last season.

Mahomes currently has 10 NFL records, including the ones for career passing rating (105.8) and career passing yards per game (303.4) among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 attempts.

Mahomes has thrown for 18,991 yards and 151 touchdowns. Billy Joe Tolliver had the previous highs for a Texas Tech quarterback in the NFL with 10,760 yards and 59 TDs.
