Texas Tech basketball to play Texas, Baylor twice in Big 12 play in 2023-24

The Texas Tech basketball team now knows its Big 12 matchups for the 2023-24 season.

The conference announced its scheduling matrix Thursday with every team getting five opponents twice, four teams just at home and four others on the road only.

The switch away from the tradition round-robin format stems from the addition of four new members to the Big 12 in Houston, UCF, BYU and Cincinnati. Each team will still have 18 conference games. The full conference schedule, including dates, will be announced in the future.

Texas Tech will get two final matchups with longtime rival Texas before the Longhorns head off to the SEC next summer. Both teams will get home games.

Other teams the Red Raiders will play twice include Baylor, Oklahoma State, TCU and newcomer UCF. This gives Tech a trip to Orlando in the Knights' first year in the Big 12.

Kansas, BYU, Cincinnati and Kansas State will each visit Lubbock during the season. Tech will be on the road against Iowa State, Houston, Oklahoma and West Virginia.

According to the news release, matchups were determined by geographic location, historical results and a poll of conference coaches to help balance travel and competitiveness.

Aside from the two meetings with Texas, Tech has a few notable matchups on the docket. These include Kansas and Kansas State both visiting Lubbock.

The Red Raiders will not have to visit Allen Fieldhouse, and it'll be one last return to United Supermarkets Arena for Kevin McCullar Jr., a former Tech standout entering his second year with the Jayhawks.

Kansas State, which advanced to the Elite Eight a year ago, features North Texas transfer Tylor Perry, who played for new Tech coach Grant McCasland at UNT. Perry helped lead the Mean Green to the National Invitational Tournament championship last season.

The Red Raiders are coming off a 16-16 campaign. The program has since undergone a complete transformation with an entirely new coaching staff plus seven new players joining six returners from last year's roster.

Other games officially announced for Tech's 2023-24 schedule includes the Battle 4 Atlantis Nov. 22-24 in the Bahamas and a trip to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to take on Butler as part of the Big 12-Big East Battle Nov. 30.
