Texas A&M Preseason Profile: Quarterback, Haynes King

Going into the 2022 football season, Aggies Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas A&M roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Jimbo Fisher this season.

Haynes King is entering his third season with Texas A&M, and was named the starting quarterback for the 2022 season on Saturday, August 28th. King is coming off of what was a devastating season-ending injury last season against Colorado and after extensive rehab throughout the season, King had the potential to play during the bowl game, but due to Covid-related issues, the Aggies couldn’t participate.

King attended Longview High School in Longview Texas and was hands down the most successful quarterback to ever dawn the Lobos uniform in program history. Coached by his Father John King, he finished his career with a 37-2 record, led the Lobos to a 16-0 record, and the Texas 6A D-II state championship during his 2018 junior season. For his career, King Accumulated 7,537 yards passing, 82 touchdowns, and only 17 interceptions in three seasons. As a true duel threat, King was lightning fast as a runner, rushing for 1,392 yards and 20 touchdowns, while rushing for 664 yards and 8 touchdowns during the 2018 season. As the 5th ranked duel threat quarterback prospect in the 2019 class, and only four spots down from Alabama starting quarterback and Heisman winner Bryce Young, head coach Jimbo Fisher had King listed as a priority recruit in the class, knowing the true potential he had to excel in the Fisher’s pro-style offense.

King committed to Texas A&M on July 17, 2019, and went into the Covid-shortened 2020 season as the primary backup to Kellen Mond, tallying 2 completions on 4 attempts for 59 yards and 1 touchdown, and an interception. After Kellen Mond declared for the NFL Draft, Haynes King was named the starter a week before the 2021 opener, battling with current Auburn Quarterback Zach Calzada. In his first start career start with the Aggies, King threw for 292 yards on 21-33, 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions, giving a glimpse of what he brings offensively for now, and the future. In the week 2 matchup against Colorado in Boulder, King went down with a leg injury while scrambling up the middle of the defense, which would ultimately be his last play with the Aggies during the season.

Depth Chart Overview

Haynes King is the starting quarterback in Texas A&M’s offense, led by head coach Jimbo Fisher, and offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey. King is in a quarterback room with Max Johnson (Junior), and Conner Weigman (Freshman). From a scouting perspective, King is maybe two or three minor tweaks away from reaching his full potential at the position, standing at 6-3, 205lbs with room to still add healthy weight and muscle mass. As one of the fastest players on Texas A&M’s roster, King is somewhat of an aberration in accordance with his height and length, but can stop and start on a dime, and is very dangerous in the open field. In the pocket, King displays good accuracy and touch on his throws, while also showing adequate ball placement, yet his passes on the run show more zip and velocity overall. His arm strength is above average at this stage, while his throwing power is still developing, but is sure to increase this season.

What sets King apart from from the rest of the depth chart is his Football IQ and general instincts as a quarterback, feeling pressures, reading defenses, and throwing his receivers open. The trust that Jimbo Fisher has in Haynes King after making his way back from injury and relentlessly competing for the starting spot says it all about what to expect next Saturday against Sam Houston State, and throughout the rest of the season for Texas A&M.
