Texas A&M Player Profile: Offensive Lineman, Layden Robinson

Going into the 2022 football season, Aggies Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Texas A&M roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Jimbo Fisher this season.

Layden Robinson is entering his junior season at the starting right guard position after spending his sophomore year as the starter during the 2021 season. As one of the veteran linemen and overall players on offense, Robinson has the opportunity to not only help the team progress throughout the season but also help his draft stock as a current prospect with a whole lot of upside. Before making his way to College Station, Texas, Layden Robinson played varsity football at Manvel High School in Manvel, Texas, where he played multiple positions across the offensive line during his career and was selected to the first-team 11-5A All-District team, voted to the high school All-Star Game three times, and named the Houston area UIL Offensive Player of the Year finalist by the Houston Touchdown Club. Robinson committed to the Aggies on June 17, 2018, and chose to redshirt during his 2019 freshman season after appearing in 2 games. During his redshirt freshman season, Robinson appeared in 10 games, totaling 32 snaps at the right guard position, soon becoming his permanent position on the offensive line. Robinson truly broke onto the scene during his 2021 redshirt sophomore season, starting 10 of 12 games (sustained an injury that resulted in two missed games) at the right guard spot, and was recognized by the coaching staff at the end of the season with the Offensive Toughness Award and Offensive Aggie Award for strength & conditioning at the annual Aggie football team banquet. The upcoming 2022 season will be vital for Robinson as he continues to develop in pass protection and builds on his strengths in run blocking.

Depth Chart Overview

Layden Robinson is currently projected as the starting right guard on the offensive line in Texas A&M’s pro-style offense, led by head coach Jimbo Fisher and offensive coordinator, Darrell Dickey. Robinson is in a first-team offensive line group that includes left tackle, Trey Zuhn III (Redshirt Freshman), left guard, Jordan Spasojevic-Moko (Redshirt Sophomore), center, Bryce Foster (Sophomore), and right tackle, Reuben Fatheree (Sophomore). Robinson is a big-bodied 6-4, 320lb mover on the offensive line, noted as one of the better run blockers in the country, and possibly the current best for the Aggies after the departure of Kenyon Green to the NFL. He displays active, strong hands and provides a great first punch at the point of attack, and has great footwork while redirecting his blocks in the run game, utilizing his natural strength and physical demeanor. Robinson has loads of experience in pass protection from different vantage points due to his time playing at left tackle during his senior year in high school. Layden Robinson has as much potential as I’ve seen since Kenyon Green’s sophomore season, and if he puts it all together and takes in what the coaches give him, we’ve got a special player on our hands, folks.
