What Texas A&M is getting in 5-star Wide receiver, Cameron Coleman

Last week, on Tuesday, July 4 to be exact, Texas A&M landed one of the top players in the 2024 cycle, five-star wide receiver Cameron Coleman, currently ranked as the 11th player in the class, and the No. 3 wide receiver prospect, excitingly committed to the Aggies on Independence Day, edging out the Auburn Tigers in what was revealed as down to the wire decision.

As nearly every outlet covering recruiting will tell you, five-star wide receivers in the last three or four recruiting cycles, which are seen as the “complete package” at the position, are 6-2 to 6-4, and if they are below the 6-1 thresh mark, elite speed, and athleticism is a must. For Coleman, who stands at 6-3 and 180 pounds, every desired trait, ranking from vertical speed, consistent downfield separation, catch radius, and YAC (yards after catch) ability, Cameron “Cam” Coleman has it all.

Primarily lining up at the X receiver spot due to his downfield speed and length, Coleman averaged 17.5 yards per catch in 2022, and no matter what coverage the defense presented, Coleman consistently skied over defenders on post rounds and was a nightmare matchup in the red zone in fades and slants.

Mirroring former Aggie wide receiver Jeff Fuller’s play style as a physical boundary receiver who thrived near the sideline and contributed as a blocker, Coleman’s potential in the Aggies’ spread/west coast offense under new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino will provide him plenty of big play opportunities once he learns the playbook.

The 2024 season will be a learning curve for Coleman, who must adjust to the elevated competition, especially in the SEC. Overall, Texas A&M’s 2024 wide receiver depth chart will likely be the most talented group in the country, as Coleman is already joined by the four-star receiver trio of Drelon Miller, Jaylon Hornsby, and Debron Gatling, with potentially more additions to come.
