Texas A&M-Commerce, Incarnate Word apologize for players' behavior

Feb. 20—Incarnate Word and Texas A&M University-Commerce released a joint statement apologizing for an incident that happened after the Lions' 76-72 basketball victory on Monday night in San Antonio.

"UIW and Texas A&M University-Commerce apologize for the behavior exhibited by our respective men's basketball programs following the game on Monday night.

"The unsportsmanlike conduct that occurred after the game does not reflect the values of the universities involved, as well as the Southland Conference and their member institutions. The matter is currently being reviewed collectively by the Conference office and both institutions."

The Lions upped their season record to 10-17 and Southland Conference mark to 4-10. The host Cardinals dropped to 8-18 and 3-10.

Alonzo Dodd led the Lions with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and one blocked shot.

Also in double figures for the Lions were Kalen Williams (16), Kwo Agwa (13) and Tommie Lewis (12).

Josh Morgan led UIW with 18 points, followed by teammates Alex Anderson (14), Shon Robinson (12) and Dylan Hayman (11).

The Lions' next scheduled game is at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, Louisiana. — The Southland Conference also released a statement about the matter.

The Southland Conference released the following statement following the postgame altercation involving the Texas A&M-Commerce and UIW men's basketball programs.

"The Southland Conference is aware of the end-of-game situation that occurred between the Texas A&M University-Commerce and the University of the Incarnate Word men's basketball teams tonight.

We will be working closely with both universities to review the footage and issue appropriate disciplinary action. Unsportsmanlike behavior is unacceptable in the Southland Conference and the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, spectators, and officials remains a top priority."
